The Tugboat (a dimly-lit pub) on Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, Calif., was site of a Dartmouth evening for 11 alumni. Date of the gathering was Wednesday, September 25. Most of the group were escaping from studies from 8 to 11 p.m. Eleven alumni, nine of whom were present, are currently stationed at the Army Language School, Presidio of Monterey.
Captain Frank Lion '50 was the only officer among several privates. He and Paul Gingold '56 are taking Korean. Joe Hayse '58 is in French, Matt Lorimer '56 studies Greek, and the rest are in Russian - John Goff, Brad Leonard, John Palmer, and Dudley Towe, all '56s, plus Dan Anderson '58. Bob Slater '56 is doing art-work at the Information Office, Ist Brigade, Ft. Ord, just east of the city of Monterey.
During the evening, a man at the bar recognized a couple of Dartmouth blazers and introduced himself to the group. He was Gil LaFreniere, who received his master's in Geology last June. On the West Coast job-hunting, he was passing through Monterey.
Also at the Language School are Terry Childs '56 and Dick Foltz '58. Next scheduled meeting of the group is November 15 at Captain Lion's home.
Kent Calhoun '52 (1) and Eugene Howard '49 (c) receive the 1957 Chicagoland Ivy League Alumni Golf Bowl, won by Dartmouth, from R.L. Childs, host chairman of the Yale team.
