The January issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE having been delivered hot off the press on the coldest day in New York in years, it is time to warm up with some news for March consumption.
First, congratulations to the men and wives of '34 who keep us young in spirit, mind and body with items like this...from Sue and Jeff Jackson, "Delighted to announce the birth of a son on December 29, 1956, at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield. Little fella weighed seven lbs. eight oz. and is named Todd Lyon Jackson." And on December 10, to Ruth and Em Day, a daughter, Sheryl Joan (their fifth), and on the same day to Dorothy and Nels Krogslund, a son, Bruce Carnie. The class is very proud of you parents.
In the field of law: Art Nissen was confirmed by the Governor's Council, as Municipal Court Judge for Lincoln County in Maine. Art has been pretty busy since graduating from Tuck School and Boston College Law School. He was New England manager of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. and during the war was in charge of transportation at Bath Iron Works. A Republican, Art and Marjorie have three children.
Next we have Don Allen appointed assistant general counsel of New England Electric. He has been associated with that organization since 1951. Following Don is Oscar Ruebhausen, a partner in the firm of Debevoise, Plimpton & McLean. Oscar was reappointed chairman of the Atomic Energy Committee of the New York City Bar Association. He is also a trustee of Bennington College.
We gather from our Washington sources that Bob Oare was appointed to an advisory group of 27 financial leaders. This was announced by the Senate Banking Sub-Committee, headed by Senator Robertson of Virginia. Bob is Chairman of Associates Investment Co. of South Bend. The purpose of the committee is to draw a new banking code and to make recommendations for a tentative bill to be introduced in the Senate.
Still in the Washington spotlight is Ernie Barcella who writes that he had a flying summer.
Flew to Europe and North Africa for a tour of Air Force bases in France, England, Germany, Italy, Greece, Libya, Morocco and the Azores. Then to Chicago to cover the Democratic Convention, to San Francisco for the GOP and then to Las Vegas to make a first-hand study of certain mathematical conventions. (Didn't seem to work out too well for me.) Also a short campaign trip with Ike. All the while I left Louise home with Andrea and Lawrie to take care of selling the house, packing and moving us into an apartment (while we build another house). Cad! The four of us hope to get to Hanover this summer.
Ed Klee also yearns for Hanover from 1001 Entrada Road, Sacramento 25, Calif, (new address). Ed went to work for the Welfare Department in November and, to conform with local requirements, moved to the aforementioned address where he intends to live for the next few years. "Have been hoping to drive back to New Hampshire with Babette and the children, Virginia and John, so that they may see the beauties of the place and since it has been 24 years since I left there, to refresh my memories."
Sig Stern writes on the occasion of his successful completion of the final part of his examinations for the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is now a Diplomate, a certified specialist in the field. Formerly a general practitioner in New Rochelle he now limits his practice to internal medicine. He also nostalgically tells us in his letter:
I had a sniff of Hanover on my way to Mooselauke Ravine Lodge for a weekend with Louise and my older son Ricky, aged nine. He had been badgering us to take him to the great Green part of the world. The campus looked good even with a ditch across it that looked like a salvage-clear Suez Canal. The White Mountains were wonderful even though the top of Cannon Mountain reminded Ricky of Central Park on a warm spring Sunday afternoon.
Bill Cahn has been appointed Director of Communications at Ruder & Fink, a New York public relations firm. Bill will supervise the creation and production of presentations, booklets, reprints and other graphic material. His latest book was a pictorial biography of Einstein. Bill was on the staff of the "Bridgeport Times Star" for ten years and also was public relations consultant to the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra and other organizations.
A card from Link Daniels who went to school many years ago with my wife Liz. He too has moved to Washington and is ensconced at 5617 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda, Md. Works for Uncle Sam in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare where he is chief of Community Services in the Children's Bureau. The work consists of advice to state and national organizations on the prevention and control of juvenile delinquency.
Jack O'Brien with Mary and two of his five children were in Ithaca, N. Y. for a weekend last fall. There was quite a reunion of '34: Nick Xanthaky and Alice, Bill Sheffeld and Bunny, and George Kimball and Nan. Jack is with Dayston Furniture in Olean, N. Y. Bill, who is with Garlock Packing Company, also "farms" on the side. He served highballs for the thirsty brethren in town for the Cornell-Dartmouth game.
Bill Wilson has been trying to locate one of our lost class-mates - Jack Edward Wilson. The Jack E. Wilson listed in our directory as living in Smyrna, Del. is not our vintage. He has been the recipient of all our correspondence and bills (though he hasn't paid any) and now he advises that he was exactly nine years old when the rest of us graduated from the Hanover plain. He did attend Dartmouth as a V-12 student for four months in 1944 but there all similarity ceaseth. Does anyone know where we can find our own Jack E. boy? I recall he was a Deke but left before graduation.
Just so Art Reinherz won't get lost because of his change of address let me quote from his letter to Daddy Jeff Jackson: "My new address is 4447 Bakman Avenue, North Hollywood, Calif. I'm still with Uncas Manufacturing Company and have taken over the Western division. The change in climate and living out here takes a deal of adjustment. The family loves it, however, and I'm kept very busy so all is well. I hope to locate the Dartmouth '34 gang."
Am sure by this time he has been greeted by our West Coast representative Bill Adams and some of his coterie like Bill Hackley,Wendell Williams, Dick Benedict, Dave Easton, Bill Eldridge, Roger Fosdick, Bill Gay,Mike Menchel and Stan Silverman. They all live around the corner, Art, and if you want any other good addresses I'll send them to you privately.
Have saved the most wonderful news of all for mv closing paragraph. Orv Dryfoos was elected to the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth on January 25, 1957. He is the youngest member of the present Board and the entire class is proud of you, Orv.
