In searching for something to brighten this corner where we are, we wandered into Baker Library the Friday afternoon of the Harvard weekend expecting to find it deserted but functioning on at least one cylinder, or one girl-power depending upon your taste. Lo, and whatever else might express extreme wonderment, the place was teeming with scholars.
All of which we contribute only as sort of a fashion note on the life and times at that famous Indian academy we used to know so well. But it also points out verily that it was:
THIRTY YEARS AGO that... Acting Dean of Freshmen C. R. Lingley was reporting that statistics of the Class of 1934 showed an average age of 18.01, with the oldest 26.1 and the youngest 15.9 ... of the 664 entering, nine did so because the school was not co-ed. ... The Dartmouth reviewed the unbeaten season of the 1934 freshman football team and reported the freshman basketball team cut to 25 ... one R. E. Wilmot on returning from Thanksgiving recess got as far as Greenfield Hospital when the car in which he was a passenger skidded and took down 25 feet of fence ... and E. W. Cowie helped carry four kids out of a burning house ... the college was vox-popping all over the place over something called "Companionate Marriage" ... and the Diner modestly proclaimed "Our small steaks are surprisingly large — 40 cents."
Bill Scherman with his built-in press time advantage is way ahead on the Holy Cross weekend coverage, but we'd like to murmur "Amen" to his thought that this annual gathering of '34 seems to be catching on more each year. You fellows ought to think about it for 1961. We could add, too, that even in Worcester where calm, cool reasoning in things football seldom prevails, they claim only that the Holy Cross place kick and consequent win proves the efficacy of prayer.
In addition to the eminent personages mentioned by Bill in attendance at that disaster, our scouts report that Walt Ready sat in on it with Dr. Norm Crisp '21 who coached in our time. Irv Diamond and wife were also due to act as chauffeurs for two young ladies from Smith, one, daughter Barbara, who were weekending in Hanover.
NAMES IN THE NEWS, this month ... Nels Krogslund of Middletown, N. Y., was recently named the New York State 1960 "Automobile Dealer of the Year" for outstanding citizenship, meritorious contributions to the automobile industry and leadership in public service Clarence Davies has received the McGovern Award for 1960 as the tennis umpire who in the opinion of the award committee has done the most during the year for the cause of tennis officiating ... and Gard Brown, although a native of Somerville, Mass., now thought to be a staunch and devoted Mainiac, has returned to his native state as the executive vice president of the Agricultural National Bank of Pittsfield.
Our New York office, in the person of Hank Werner, lifts some of the weight off our shoulders with a very fine scouting report on things around the town since big Khrush left... or even before, because one of Mr. K's guests at a lavish reception at the Soviet UN mission before he left was identified as Albert Kahn, author. ... Hank further reports that he met Fitch Briggs while both were in the process of depositing sons at Hotchkiss in September ... and that in the same locale, Kent, Conn., Ray Hulsart now has a new country place. .. one of Hank's scouts tells him further that Harry Brague, as one of the most important men in the Scribner organization, has complete charge of Ernest Hemingway's work ... and that Dan Schuyler, professor of law at Northwestern, is also Associate Editor of "The Tax Counselor's Quarterly."
From the society pages of near and far, we might steal a couple of items. . . for instance, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene J. Orsenigo of Chappaqua, N. Y., have announced the engagement of their daughter Nina Frances to Robert Michael Keane ... and Mr. and Mrs. Russell D. Ireland, of Shrewsbury, Mass., will by the time this reaches print, have a married daughter, Susan, who will now be known more formally as Mrs. Stephen K. Brown.
Then we have those lovely dues notices rolling in, which, if it is worth it, do so much to keep this column in business... from Bill Ramsey in Omaha, the word that Bill Baird is just about the leading legal light in that area and that he himself is president of the American Savings Company formed from the merger of two Omaha banks ... and Bob Balgley traveled far and wide from West Hartford, Conn., during the summer taking his wife and three children over 11,500 miles of America. Bob makes a good reporter, "Amongst '34's visited were Bob Smith and his charming wife at their ranch outside Buffalo, Wyo. (lots of open country there and thousands of steers); also successful lawyer Dave Easton with spacious Hollywood office and equally spacious home. Spent an afternoon with Art Reinherz and family (mostly in their swimming pool). Managed to get through Las Vegas with enough money to get home." ... John Randall is now executive vice-president of Kearney and Trecker Corporation, one of the country's best known builders of machine tools.... Mike Menchel, with warehouses bursting with toys is all ready for Christmas and hoping that there is a Santa Claus.. .. Andy Anderson has been elected First Reader of First Church of Christ Scientist in Cleveland Heights.... Bob Ford laments that his two sons refuse to go north to school. One is at Franklin and Marshall and the senior in high school is heading for Johns Hopkins... and the class baby Ed Moore III is the father of Laurie Michele, born 10/14/60 in Tucson... which is almost where we came in.
This month we have another tough one to report in the death of Bill Hartman. We have asked Hank Werner who has known Bill well through the years to write the In Memoriam.
We could keep this thing going. You fellows in your old age are getting literate. And the class has provided just the right opportunity for English composition on the reverse side of the bills, so continue to take advantage of it. But reports from the TV center say that Charley Conerley is in trouble and may need some expert, albeit armchair, direction. So we proceed to the armchair.
