BIBLIOGRAPHY OF TEXAS,
MAY 1957 MARCUS A. MCCORISON

1795-T845.Part II, Mexican Imprints Relating to Texas,1803-1845. By Thomas W. Streeter '04. Cambridge, Mass: Harvard University Press,1956. xxiv, 28} pp. $1.00.

In Part II of his Bibliography of Texas, 1795-1845, Thomas W. Streeter carries on the work so notably begun with the two volumes of Part I, covering Texas imprints. The present volume records printed matter relating to Texas but printed in Mexico. Part III, now in preparation, will deal with European and United States imprints of Texas import.

As most readers of this review will know, the basis of the Bibliography lies in Mr. Streeter's unparalleled collection of Texasiana, which was recently sold to Yale and which, with the Coe Collection of Western Americana already there, surely forms one of the greatest accumulations of this type of material in the world. To demonstrate the primacy of the Streeter Collection, let us cite the fact that of 325 items in this part, Mr. Streeter owned 192 while the next largest holding (in Texas) numbers 138. Of these 192 items, Mr. Streeter's, time and time again, represent the sole recorded survivor.

The notes to items in the Bibliography ofTexas make fascinating reading, whether one is well versed in Texas history or not, and what Mr. Streeter has accomplished, in addition to compiling a most excellent bibliography, is to write a brief history of the territory based on its primary printed sources.

The compiler is to be congratulated on several counts: first, for having the persistence and foresight to form his collection; second, for having the persistence and scholarly ability to construct a useful and well-made bibliography; and third, for having the wit to make it interesting.
