Dartmouth Association of Rhode Island has been busy this winter at various gatherings, including an evening "smoker" in January to view football movies of the 1956 season. The Dartmouth-Brown hockey game in February was preceded by a cocktail party and dinner at a nearby restaurant, at which 60-odd Dartmouth alumni, wives and guests were present. The hockey game was particularly satisfying, the Green winning it 7 to 5. Hanover teams are having more luck this year in Providence than they did last year, and we Rhode Islanders draw great pleasure from these victories.
The most important event of this year was the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Dartmouth Association of Rhode Island, marked by a dinner held at Wannamoisett Country Club on March 14. President Dickey came down from Hanover to honor the meeting by his presence. The 65 Rhode Island alumni present heard him reminisce of earlier days of the College and outline future plans, with particular regard to the policies that guide Purpose and Program, and the influence of Place on Dartmouth men.
Among those present were two members of the original group of 30-odd alumni who had formed the Rhode Island Association in 1907, Dr. Arthur Ruggles '02 and Mr. Walter Small '05. These men described the birth of the Association at the Crown Hotel in Providence and traced its history to the present day. We must note also that Mr. Earl Richards '07 has attended 48 of the 50 annual meetings the Association has held.
Don Taylor '43 is our newly elected President, succeeding Dick Holden '25 who has given us a rewarding year through his time and effort.
The next Association activity will be a dinner-dance at Agawam Hunt Club on April 27. This is always a popular affair, and we expect an excellent turnout. At this dance, the winner of a trip to Bermuda for two will be drawn from as many raffle tickets as we have been able to peddle. The raffle is for the benefit of the Arthur Ruggles Scholarship Fund, and should increase its capital substantially. Dr. Ruggles, former Trustee of the College, is one of her most distinguished alumni. We are working to establish a living memorial to him in the form of a Scholarship Fund to send a Rhode Island man to Dartmouth who otherwise would have been unable to go.
