DARTMOUTH'S 1958 Dartmouth Alumni Fund ended on June 30 with a total of $455,301 contributed by 14,361 Dartmouth alumni, parents and friends. The figures, of course, were considerably less than for recent campaigns because of the fact that many alumni and parents were not solicited for the Fund, but were asked instead to make their contributions through the Capital Gifts Campaign.
In place of the usual Green Derby competition, the 1958 campaign featured a Tribal Sweepstakes competition based on participation only. Winners in the various groups were: Group I — 1913 under Edward B. Luitwieler; Group II—1916 led by Alexander J. Jardine; Group III - 1925, Ford H. Whelden, head agent; Group IV - 1931 led by William L. Wilson; Group V - 1942 under Russell Hartranft Jr.; Group VI - 1950 with Theodore E. Bamberger as head agent; and Group VII - 1953 led by Edward J. Spiegel.
Top dollar class in the 1958 campaign was 1915 which, under the leadership of Roy Lafferty, produced $14,284 for the Alumni Fund while at the same time recording the largest dollar total in the Capital Gifts Campaign. Three other classes—1925 under Ford H. Whelden, 1924 led by Phillips M. Van Huyck, and 1927 whose Head Agent Roger B. Salinger died during the campaign - all received more than $10,000.
As in the past, the younger classes dominated the contributor columns with nine classes recording over 500 gifts. The Class of 1953, led by Ted Spiegel, had the largest contributor count with 578, while the Class of 1950, led by Ted Bamberger, showed gifts from 561 men. Other classes over the goo mark were, in order, 1952, 1942, 1941, 1951, 1935, 1954, and 1946. The contributor figures for all classes included both direct gifts to the 1958 Alumni Fund and credit for men who were removed from Alumni Fund solicitation last spring because they were being approached through the Capital Gifts Campaign.
The proceeds from the 1958 Alumni Fund were used to meet College operating expenses for 1957-58. Some funds for this purpose also came from the Capital Gifts Campaign.
A complete report on 1958 Alumni Fund results will appear in a later issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
Looking ahead to next spring, the Alumni Fund Committee had already agreed that there would be no formal Alumni Fund campaign in 1959. Most alumni and parents will then be participating in the Capital Gifts Campaign. However, the Alumni Fund Committee also stressed the fact that the Fund would always be open for gifts and that any alumnus who participates in the Capital Gifts Campaign before it ends next year will automatically receive Alumni Fund credit for contributor and regularity purposes for 1958 and 1959 and for any subsequent years in which payments on pledges are being made.
In a message sent to some 2,300 Class Agents in early August President Dickey wrote in part: "The magnificent 1958 Alumni Fund given by over 14,000 alumni and parents at the same time that some 4,000 other alumni and parents were launching the Capital Gifts Campaign with over $8,000,000 in pledges and gifts is wonderful proof that Dartmouth's purposes today, as in the past, are promises her men will see kept. What you did in 1958 is the best assurance we can have that there will always be an Alumni Fund and that it will be an ever and ever greater source of Dartmouth strength so long as there are stalwarts to man the ranks of her Class Agents."
