FIVE James B. Reynolds Foreign Scholarships, each carrying a stipend of $2,000, will be awarded to outstanding Dartmouth graduates for study abroad during the academic year 1958-59. Alumni are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to recent graduates and to members of the senior class.
The Scholarships may be used for study in any field at a recognized educational institution in any foreign country, except that in the selection of one of the five Reynolds Scholars preference may be given to an equally well-qualified applicant who plans to study in Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Finland. Programs of scholarly investigation or creative activity to be pursued independently may be approved in unusual cases.
Application blanks are obtainable from the Office of Student Counseling, 214 McNutt Hall, and must be returned to Prof. H. Gordon Skilling, chairman of the Committee on Graduate Fellowships, 311 Thornton Hall. An application must contain a statement of the proposed plan of study or research, together with official transcripts of college and graduate school grades and a recent photograph of the applicant. Also, from three to five supporting letters testifying to the character and ability of the applicant should be sent directly to Professor Skilling.
Completed applications and all required documents must reach the Chairman not later than March 12. The supporting letters must include one or more from graduate school professors or from employers or supervisors and must include at least one from a member of the Dartmouth faculty. The Chairman will arrange interviews with alumni who are able to appear in person before the Committee. Interviews are not necessary.
