DR. HOPKINS AT 80
In a richly deserved gesture of tribute Dartmouth College is paying honor tonight to its former president, Dr. Ernest Martin Hopkins, who became 80 years old last Nov. 6. At Dartmouth Dr. Hopkins won admiration for his open-mindedness, his definition of educational aims, his administrative skill and his warm personal leadership. In the more than quarter-century that followed his assumption of the college presidency Dartmouth men came to look upon him as the epitome of everything the college stood for, and he elicited from them loyalty and affection.
Some 18,000 men who studied at Dartmouth during Dr. Hopkins' presidency now form the great bulk of the alumni body. During World War I the educator served in Washington as a specialist in industrial relations. In World War II he again served the Government in the nation's capital. Since he left the Dartmouth presidency in 1945 Dr. Hopkins has served in executive portions with the National Life Insurance Company of Vermont. The dinner which Dartmouth College will give tonight at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in honor of Dr. Hopkins marks a milestone in the institution's history.
