THE new dormitories, at $420 per man, will have the highest rent on campus, reflecting in part the fully furnished rooms and the provision of large social lounges. In order to avoid the creation of any sort of "gold coast" and to make it possible for a number of scholarship men to live there and take part in the new plan of student living, the Trustees have approved an increase in the scholarship budget explicitly for that purpose.
The availability of 300 new dormitory spaces next fall will permit the College to reduce the occupancy in many overcrowded suites in older residence halls. This will mean a higher rental per occupant next fall, and at the same time, for all dormitories, the College will put into effect the second step in the increased scale of dorm rents announced a year ago and initiated last fall.
Room rents will increase an average of $30 Per man in the dormitories now in use, lifting that average from $280 to $310. Including the new Choate Road dorms, the average rental next year will be about $340 compared with the present $280.
The need to make realistic adjustments in room rentals was seen by the Trustees some time ago, but it was decided to make this a two-year action which in its final step could take into consideration current costs and the reduced occupancy in some rooms. Higher operating expenses have brought about rental increases in 1948,1954, 1957 and 1958.
