I am sure that everyone will be grieved and shocked to learn of the untimely death of Jack Kelsey on March 9 in London, England, after being afflicted with hepatitis for several months. The memorial article on Lt. Col. Jack Kelsey of the U.S. Marine Corps will appear later in this MAGAZINE. On behalf of every member of our class I would like to express the deepest sympathy to Jack's mother and father, his wife, and his three lovely children. All who enjoyed the privilege of knowing him as classmates at Dartmouth admired him and will retain a keen memory of his genial, unassuming personality and boundless energy. It is for this reason that his passing casts a shadow of sorrow on all of us.

In a recent exchange of business correspondence with George Brand of Detroit, Mich., I was able to ferret out the latest on George and his family. George is associated with his father in the practice of law in Detroit, putting in non-union hours and thereby managing to keep the wolf away from the door of his new home in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. Last summer George, Pat and their three children expanded into an older home. Since then he and Pat have become experts in interior decorating, painting, carpentry, and tile laying. But they still find time to ski occasionally during the winter and to sail during the summer in their cruising sloop and sailing dinghy. On a recent business trip to Washington they enjoyed the hospitality of attorneys Clif and Lydia Stratton.

In January Bill McKelvey, vice president and general merchandising manager of G.M. McKelvey Co. of Youngstown, Ohio, was elected to a three-year term as director of the National Retail Dry Goods Association, representing Ohio. The election took place at the 46th annual convention of the association in New York. Bill has been associated with his store for fifteen years. After holding numerous merchandising positions, he was promoted to vice president three years ago. Bill is also very active in community affairs. Last November he was co-chairman of the Community Chest drive.

When I have to keep a weather-eye out for news, I carefully peruse those portions of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE often not widely read by most of us. Recently I found my efforts in this regard very remunerative, particularly by way of news of club activities of many of our energetic classmates. Two of our service-men stationed in the Land of the Rising Sun attended a recent affair of the Tokyo Club. Major Roger Haley, stationed at Tachikawa, was a first-timer at a club function. As usual, Capt. Dick Jachens and his wife were on hand. Any of the wives culinarily inclined and desirous of trying out new dishes on hubby might like to drop a line to Mrs. Jachens. Maybe she will reluctantly part with a few of the Japanese recipes, of which she and Dick have become connoisseurs.

Bob Mensel was recently elected President of the Cheshire County Club of Keene, N.H., for the ensuing year.

'41'ers had a field day at the recent election of the Monmouth County, N.J., Club. GeorgeBaine, Harry Douty, and Charlie Schlenker were elected members of the executive committee. Charlie is New York representative of New England Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston, Mass. Unless he has stepped up the ladder recently, George is still trust officer of the Second National Bank of Red Bank, N.J.

The Alumni Register periodically lists EdStone as a licensed trainer of thoroughbred race horses in Rockport, Mass. The racing season just opened at Jamaica, Ed. Do you have any hot tips for the boys?

I am sure that everyone noticed the picture of our handsome Treasurer, Stu Steffey, attending a luncheon session of the February meeting of the Alumni Council. Lew Johnstone was also on hand for the meeting.

When one sees a picture of Stu Steffey he thinks of two things, his energetic and versatile accomplishments at the piano - and money!! This time, however, the plug is not for Stu but for Class Agent Bruce Friedlich and all of his industrious sub-agents. Won't everyone please spare them writer's cramp by sending in their contributions to the 1958 Alumni Fund early. If possible, please dig a little deeper this year also.
