It seems peculiar to be reporting winter happenings on a spring day and yet the events of the past couple months are most news worthy. During February, Harry Jacobs' plans for a family ski trip to Europe materialized. He, Marie and the two children flew via TWA to Zurich, Switzerland and then went on to Zurs Am Arlberg in Austria. During the flight, they had the surprised companionship of Lennie Woods who currently hails from Bogota, Colombia and where, according to Harry, he is engaged in cattle ranching (may we hear more about this from you, Lennie?). Comfortably settled in the Hotel Flexen deep in the Austrian Alps, the Jacobs marveled at the snow con- ditions and spent the first week in ski classes learning how to cope with up to eighteen inch powder. Three weeks skied by all too fast and by early March they were back home after having spent three days each in Paris and London enroute.
During this same month, Bob and JaneSmith leisured north to Mont Tremblant, spending an evening on the way in Montreal. From Bob's glowing report of the facilities and accommodations, I'm satisfied the week they spent in Canada just whetted their appetites for next year. In the meantime, Bob as sales manager of Smith and Klebes, Inc., industrial supplies, is very busy with their new branch opened early in April in Groton, Conn.
Since October, when Dex and Genelle Richards announced the sale of Dexter's, we have waited for further word as to their plans. We now have some of the story as Dex reports he is presently "unemployed" but very much occupied. The first part of his "sabbatical" was devoted to improving his skiing with sailing to follow this summer and "learning about young sprouts both times." The young sprout arrived February 23, as Dexter Randall, so you can imagine the excitement in Sunapee. By 1959, Dex plans to go into some type of business on his own and is currently keeping his ear to the ground for ideas while working on an invention which is yet to be disclosed. Any classmate with a red-hot scheme? Perhaps you and Dex should form a partnership.
And while speaking of family additions, etc., Don Amy proudly reports the arrival of a second daughter, Virginia Grace, born on March 10. Hans Huessy was married to Mrs. Mariot Gardner Montgomery in Norwich, Vt., on March i, and tells us he will be leaving his present position as director of the Community Mental Health Boards of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties, N.Y., on July 1 with destination unknown. Going with him will be his household of six children (from Pamela, age twelve, to Collin, age four), a donkey, two dogs, two cats, two mice, a rabbit and a pet skunk. What, no parrot?
Gardie Bridge, who has been Director of Admissions at Trinity College, Hartford Conn., since 1956, following several years on enrollment and admissions work at Dartmouth, spends a good amount of time in the capacity of guest speaker. On a recent occasion, he spoke at the local "Y" luncheon on the subject "Who Should Go to College?"
The town of Jarrettsville, Md., is indeed fortunate to have what seems to be almost obsolete in these days of specialization. Jim Thompson is engaged in what he describes as a "country physician's practice." He expects, by May 1, to occupy a new office which would seem to indicate that after nine years in this town Doc Jim was here to stay.
Through the courtesy of Lippman's clipping service we are able to complete the story of Ed Hawkridge, Newton School Committee candidate, which started in the January column. He was elected by the "large and impressive margin of 113 votes in over 13,000." Writes Ed, "I was particularly helped by Dartmouth men living in Newton, of which there are over 100." Now I see where the margin came from! But joking aside, our communities are fortunate to have people like Ed with the desire, ability and time to devote to our local problems, particularly the pressing school situation. And this goes double for the wives like Edee who see less and less of their husbands as the time-consuming requirements of such positions eat up the extra hours.
Hot off the promotion turntable is the March announcement of Dick Godfrey as the new Kansas City sales manager for Ford Division of Ford Motor Company. Dick, who has been with Ford since 1945, will leave his current post as assistant district sales manager in the Buffalo, N.Y., district office for the larger assignment. In his new capacity, he will supervise the sales activities of some 250 Ford dealerships in western Missouri and Kansas.
Alex and Betty Fanelli, after a year in Rome, Italy, are more than happy with the decision Alex made to combine his research background and language fluency to accept his current post with the U.S. Information Service as Research Officer for Italy. Betty and the two children are pretty well adjusted to Roman living and understand the language quite well but are still hesitant in speaking. Being on the scene, so to speak, has permitted the Fanellis to see the wonders of Rome and the surrounding countryside in a leisurely manner as opposed to the tourist's frantic pace. Of Dartmouth men in Italy Alex writes,
We were pleasantly surprised to find some '42s in Italy: Bob Gale (on a Fulbright scholarship in Naples where he teaches at the University and tours the country giving lectures on American Literature) and Baxter Lanius up north in Torino where he is Vice Consul and Administrative Officer at the Consulate; Bill Gahagan '35 doing a wonderful job teaching at the Overseas School of Rome (he is Chris' teacher) and Rem (Sonny) Drury '48 with Gulf Italia. One of the pleasant hazards of living in Rome is that eventually almost everyone you have known goes through here so any '42s contemplating a trip to Italy are cordially invited to drop in, just call us at 88.019 (Via Barnaba Oriani 38) or call the Embassy 414, extension 619.
There you have it for May and what could be more exciting than to close on Alex's invitation to "drop in." See you in Rome?
