DARTMOUTH'S 189th Commencement on Sunday, June 8, will be honored by the presence of the Reverend Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, President of Notre Dame University, as principal commencement speaker. Father Hesburgh is now completing his term in office at the University, presidents of Catholic schools being limited to six-year terms by Canon Law.
A well-known educator, Father Hesburgh has also gained prominence as a writer and in the public service field. He has been a member of the Scholarship Board of the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Hoover Commission, the General Motors Scholarship Board, and the Special Studies Board of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. He was the Vatican City delegate to the Conference on Statutes of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
A graduate of Notre Dame, Father Hesburgh earned his Ph.B. at the Gregorian University in Rome in 1940, and was awarded his S.T.D. from the Catholic University of America in 1945. After receiving this degree he taught at Notre Dame, becoming chairman of the Department of Religion in 1948 and vice president of the University in 1949. In 1952 he was appointed President of Notre Dame.
The Commencement weekend program starts officially with the Class Day exercises in the Bema at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 6. At 8:15 that evening President and Mrs. Dickey will be at home to the graduating class, parents, faculty, alumni and guests. At 12:30 p.m. Saturday, in the Gym, the Commencement Luncheon will be given by the College for seniors and their parents, faculty and alumni and their wives. President Dickey and Lauris G. Treadway '08, for the 50-Year Class, will be among the speakers.
The procession to the Commencement and Baccalaureate exercises will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8, and at 11 a.m. the exercises will take place on the lawn of Baker Library. In case of rain the exercises will be held in Alumni Gymnasium with overflow space in Webster Hall and Rollins Chapel.
