The Dartmouth track team under Coach Ellie Noyes was to open its spring season at the Penn Relays on April 25-26, and a pre-season look indicates that Dartmouth's track fortunes are on the upswing.
The Indians have a good squad in the weight and field events. Veterans Pete Klinge and Steve Margolis and., sophomores Charlie Wingarten, Wes Mattson and Rod Isaacson in the weight events; sophomore record-breaker Karl Mayer in the discus and javelin; Bob Nelson in the pole vault; and Bob Rapp, Dave Sloper and Bill Danforth in the broad jump are all potential scorers. Phil Drescher and Jack Stromberg are back in the high-jump competition along with sophomore Bryant Barnes.
The Indians also look good in the distance events with an all-veteran combination of Captain Dick Schad, Tom Lennox, Ed Berkowitz, Mike Kistler and Bruce Henry running in the mile and two-mile and helping out with the relays.
The dash and hurdle events are relatively weaker, with Lynn Carlin, Bill Storm and Taylor Tyler in the dashes and Bob Rapp and Bill Danforth the top hurdlers. Jerry Boyle, Bob Coyler, Jim Mueller and Jim Wooster, along with Captain Schad and Mike Kistler, are the Big Green middle-distance unit and relay combinations.
Dartmouth has few individual stars, but with a strong, well-balanced team, it can give any team a real battle in dual competition this spring.
