DOLLARS FOR YOU.
June 1958 CHAUNCEY N. ALLEN '24

By Adrian A. Paradis'34. New York: David McKay Company,Inc. 1958. 179pp. $3.00.

This very potentially useful book is the fifth from the pen of businessman Paradis; his own "Suggested Readings" modestly lists only one other, but the dust-wrapper mentions them all. His suggestions reflect a career as salesman, accountant, hotel manager, law librarian (degree in Library Science) before he went to work for American Airlines.

From my own experience with teen-agers, I wonder how many will read this book with maximum profit. It is indeed a gold mine of information and detailed suggestions; the ones who need its help, however, are often those who would never think of turning to a book to find it - they are the majority who function on a trial-and-error basis and flounder. But community and school libraries ought to buy this book and feature it prominently; guidance officers in the schools should recommend it - and have enough copies available for their readers.

What of the content? Part One, "Suggestions for the Young Businessman," will probably get a light once-over although it deserves more. The hints on managing money are, in my experience, beyond the majority of boys and girls. Part Two, "Working for Others," lists job opportunities and how to find them. Excellent. Part Three, "Selling" also has good detailed suggestions that can ring the cash register. But my best compliments go to Part Four, "A Business of Your Own." This suggests how to turn hobbies into gold, working for others and for yourself, and the payoff for imagination ("Cash for Your Ideas").

Here are answers to many questions young-sters ask. Our task is to make sure they know this book exists for their use. Well done, Mr. Paradis.
