The annual "Tomahawk Dinner" of the Long Island Dartmouth Association, held at the Sky Club in Garden City, N. Y., on May 14, served again to welcome the newly selected freshmen from Long Island and to provide the occasion for presenting the club's coveted Tomahawk Awards.

Honored with the awards this year were Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, who was cited for his distinguished work on behalf of the College and Dartmouth alumni; and Bill Cunningham '19, famous as a Boston newspaper columnist and a Dartmouth Great. As is our custom, a Tomahawk was presented also to our retiring president, Roland R. Hummel '42. Orton H. Hicks 'si, Vice President of the College, was master of ceremonies and made the awards on behalf of the Long Island alumni.

Under the chairmanship of Ed Warnke '19, the dinner was a huge success, with more than 175 present. Parents of the newly selected freshmen were invited along with their sons, and Dartmouth men and their wives attended from all parts of Long Island and New York City.

Long Island's now-famous Tomahawk, which has become the club's official insignia, is handsomely designed, and bears a silver, inscribed plate for each honor award. It dates back to the late 1930's when Art Keleher '27 fashioned one to use as a gavel. Ed Warnke '19 and Frank Hall '41 were mainly responsible for developing the Tomahawk into its present, prized status.

Eleven presidents of the association have received Tomahawks, and others honored to date have been President Dickey, William Coulson '18h, Myles J. Lane '28, Coach Bob Blackman, Edward T. Chamberlain '36, Bill Cunningham '19 and Sid Hayward '26.

Preparations are already under way for the next awards dinner in May i960. Recipients of the club honor will be chosen by a committee headed by Ed Warlike.

At Lone Island's annual Tomahawk Award Dinner in May were: (l to r) Ed Warnke 19, the dinner chairman; Bill Cunningham '19 and Sid Hayward '26, who received tomahawks; and Vice President of the College Ort Hicks '21, who was master of ceremonies.
