Class Reunion - The 36th Hanover - June 15, 16, 17

Our able reunion chairman, Howard D. In a letter to Jim Broe, George D. Good-year Jr. of Akron. Ohio, who entered Dartmouth in 1923 clears up a misconception on Jim's part. Jim has always given him credit for the Goodyear tire which he won in the Delayed Twentieth Reunion raffle. "There have never been any Goodyears connected with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company," says George.

John L. Griffin loomed in 48 New Hampshire Hall in 1919. In June 1923 John transferred to Hobart College where he received his B.S. Degree in June 1924.' John saw overseas service in Africa with the 91st Squadron, 81st Fighter Group as radio operator. This service was from June 1942 to December 1944. He is a salesman with Cassell Real Estate, Shrub Oak, N. Y., is not married but "willing."

On February 15 Karl C. Williams received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Rockford College during the ceremony observing the college's uath Charter Day An- niversary. Citation for the degree was read by President Leland H. Carlson. In his address Karl said "New international machinery is needed to put all nations one. a basis of equality before the law. as all people are equal before the law in the United States today."

The Beverly Evening Times of February 17 carried the following in the city local column: "All Dartmouth College alumni, fathers of sons in college and friends of the college, are cordially invited to attend the North Shore Dartmouth Club's monthly luncheon to be held February 18 at the Flotel Hawthorne in Salem. William B. Welch, noted lecturer, will present 'Fishing in Mexico.' "

Phil Leighton is the last 1923 man who has never been mentioned in this 1923 column. Phil is associated with Baunhauer Co., Inc., 951 Springhill Avenue, Mobile, Ala. His wife is Rella Glennon Leighton and they have three grown-up children, Philip, Eulalia and Glennon. He writes, "Make a trip to New England at least once a year to buy early American antiques. Have made last two trips in a sports car with very little luggage. Can usually be found .at sports car races in the South Sebring. etc. Became a grandfather in November. One son at Auburn, one just out of Army as helicopter pilot, one married daughter."

S. J. (Starr Jocelyn) Murphy has had a long career in the oil industry. After graduation he lived in Puenta Delgada, the Azores. The Murphys had five servants during the years they were here which cost them half an eagle per capita per month. Esso then sent them to Portugal and for another period to Rio de Janeiro. Back in the U.S.A. they brought their three daughters up in Wheeling, W. Va., and Columbia, S. C. Edith, Elizabeth and Dorothy are now married and Starr is retired and enjoying this retirement to the utmost. The Murphys have nine grandchildren. Starr lived in #19 Fayer-weather Hall in 1919.

Harold H. Streight graduated from Harvard Law School in 1926. His law offices are now in Suite 1100, 727 West Seventh Street, Los Angeles and he and Florence live at 1021 South Orange Grove Avenue, Pasadena, Calif.

Ralph Emerson, well known in the class as Ernie, has been with Westinghouse since early 1924. He started in Springfield, was in New York City for seven years and in Mansfield, Ohio, 24 years before moving to Columbus. Ralph and wife Lois spend their vacations on Lake Sunapee, N. H., and never fail to visit Hanover. While son George '51 was in college Ralph attended three 1923 Family Weekends. Ralph's hobby is now gardening. He built a home when he moved to Columbus and found out that landscaping can be a lot of fun but a lot of work. The Emersons have a married daughter.

Leonard F. (Shunt) Turnbull was in the real estate business in Detroit. Shunt and wife Eugenia entertained Frank and GladysDoten last fall while Frank was visiting his brother. When Art Everett moved to Grand Rapids it left Shunt pretty much alone as the last active '2ger in Detroit.

Philip T. Wagner completed 35 years' service with Western Electric Co. last July 23. Phil is at the 195 Broadway office. Phil and Gertrude are domiciled at 514 Wyndam Road, Teaneck, N. J.

John and Dorothy Zimmerman live at 193 Ocean Drive, West Stamford, Conn. John's son, John 111, graduated from Dartmouth in 1953. John was in the real estate business and is now retired.

On the stationery of Dean Witter & Co., Investment Bankers, 115 Merchant Street, Honolulu, Hawaii, Kan L. Chun writes that he and Mildred celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary with a celebration in one of the big chop suey restaurants in Honolulu where a Chinese nine-course din ner was served.

The above list will be diligently corrected and supplemented as additional vital statistics arrive in the secretary's office.

Word was recently received of the death of Benjamin White Webber on September 30, 1958, in Plymouth, Mass. Ben roomed with Bill Corrigan at 30 Hitchcock his freshman year, the only year he was at Dartmouth He was out of touch with Dartmouth and his class for many years.
