AT this mid-April writing the spring breezes blow softly across the Hanover plain and a warm sun beams down, drying up the puddles and erasing the lingering signs of winter. Only this week the Dartmouth spring teams were able to begin outdoor workouts in Hanover, although most of them had plenty of chance for practice during the spring vacation trips to the southland.
And practice it largely was, as the Big Green teams generally did not fare well on their southern junkets. Hardest hit of all was the varsity baseball team, which lost, all six contests, and the Big Green golf squad, blanked in eight matches. The best performance was turned in by the Dartmouth tennis team which won the Cherry Blossom Festival Tournament in Washington and compiled a 6-1 road record. Dartmouth's rugby team, encouraged by their December holiday trip to England, headed to the West Coast where they won three games and lost their first of the year. The Indian lacrosse team collected one victory against two defeats in an abbreviated vacation schedule, while the Dartmouth Rowing Club crews contented themselves with intrasquad races and daily workouts at the Kent School in Connecticut.
Within the next week most Dartmouth varsity teams will swing into action, with the freshman teams opening in late April. Generally the predictions are that the Big Green spring squads will do well, but the big question - whether the spring season will produce any more league championships — is unanswerable at the moment. The baseball and tennis teams appear to have the best chance.
