Is it mere linguistic hazard that the English word for soul is voiced exactly like the word betokening the bottom of a trackshoe? - Erich Segal, on the metaphysics of running, November 1977 ALUMNI MAGAZINE
IF "sole" is the reason for running, then the runner must become a queer fish. I, too, have some interest in the allegorical implications of living. But I suggest that those who seek a unification of dualism through exercise consider the bicycle.
Bicycling can be a great stimulus to creative impulses. It is quite as healthy, and you can get somewhere to boot. I have been back and forth between Boston and Hanover a couple of times. This poem is a documentation of such a trip, one that I think amply supports my alternative to all those fallen arches.
