A memorial weather post on the northwest corner of the Hanover Inn was dedicated in a brief ceremony Saturday of Reunion Week.
The memorial, sponsored by the Class of 1945, honors 24 of its members who lost their lives in World War II. After a commemorative service in Rollins Chapel for the deceased class members, the Rev. Fred Berthold '45, dean of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation, conducted the dedication on the Inn corner.
Three weather instruments, a thermometer, barometer, and hygrometer mounted in brass, together with a bronze plaque identifying the memorial weather post, have been installed. During the winter months the instruments will be supplemented by a "Snow Board" announcing ski conditions at slopes in the Hanover area.
Plans have been made to memorialize all Dartmouth war dead in a specially designed courtyard at the Hopkins Center. However, arrangements for the Class of 1945 memorial were initiated in 1955 under the leadership of the class chairman, Harry Hampton of Larchmont, N. Y., and the Trustees therefore approved the separate memorial.
