A Message from National Chairman Charles

I am thrilled to announce that just as this issue of the MAGAZINE went to press the Capital Gifts Campaign went over the $17,000,000 goal. This is truly wonderful news for the 18,000 alumni, parents and friends who have labored so mightily and given so generously in Dartmouth's behalf.

Gifts are still being received in Hanover and many solicitations remain to be completed so no final figure is available. Because the $17,000,000 was a minimum estimate of the College's capital needs and because many people have asked that they be given the balance of this tax year to determine their full participation in the campaign, we do not expect that the full result will be available until after the end of the year.

Through your faithfulness, enthusiasm and generosity you have achieved a result unprecedented in Dartmouth's history. The new capital strength thus given the College has already been put to work in faculty salary increases, the expansion and modernization of Steele, the start of construction on Baker Library additions, and excavation for the Hopkins Center. Plans are now being prepared for the new Math-Psychology building and studies on the Auditorium-Arena are going forward.

All these developments mean a stronger, more effective College. We can be justly proud of completing this first and vital phase of the 200th Anniversary Development Program so magnificently.

Since President Dickey was on vacation when the campaign went over the top we were not able to get a direct word of thanks from him in time for this report, but he will look forward, as do I, to an opportunity for making a full report with adequate thanks to you who have cared so greatly about Dartmouth.
