Dartmouth's varsity wrestling team, now in its second year under DCAC sponsorship, has shown its lack of both practice and talent by going down to defeat at the hands of Amherst, 20-8, and Harvard, 26-5, in its first two matches of the season.
Hop Holmberg, at 147 pounds, and Jay Crane, at 167, provided the only Big Green victories over Amherst, Holmberg winning by a decision and Crane by pinning his man in 5:30. Holmberg was also a winner in the Harvard contest, in which Dartmouth's other points were added by heavyweight Hank Gerfen, who wrestled to a draw.
Also wrestling for Dartmouth are Mike Duffy, 123 pounds, Eli Torbert, 130, Jerry Cantril, 137, Jim Lawrence, 157, and Fred Graybeal, 177.
Despite these early losses, Coach Bill Craver predicts his team will do much better against Wesleyan, Springfield, Albany, Tufts, Massachusetts and M.I.T., and should finish the season with more victories than losses.
