Medical School

The big news to report to you is the award of a $5.4-million federal matching grant for the acquisition of a new building and improvements in the present facilities. Construction of a seven-story building will start promptly to permit utilization by mid- 1972 when the first students in the three- year M.D. Program will be nearing completion of their course. Special note should be made of the invaluable assistance given by Senator Norris Cotton of Lebanon in securing these funds.

A second step taken by Dartmouth Medical School to alleviate the medical care shortage was the actual inauguration of the Medex Program on January 5. Twenty- three former military medical corpsmen began retraining for civilian careers as physicians' assistants. After three months of academic training, each candidate will spend one year in preceptorship training, under the close supervision of a selected cooperating private physician. Graduating candidates will be eligible to serve as medical assistants in the field.

Incidental Intelligence—Tom Sawyer M46, with his R.N. wife Cynthia, and their three offspring think that their present home, Evanston, Ill., is a far cry from Fort Fairfield, Maine, where Tom started toward his career as a psychiatrist.

Bruce LaFollette M55 has returned from Vietnam and with Wanda and the children may now be found in El Paso, Texas.

Steve Sherman M66 tells of the joys of working in Alaska as though he were a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Kathy McGoldrick M68, as secretary of her class, forwarded a detailed report of her classmates: Mike Nigrro and FrankSharkey at Cornell in surgery and pathology respectively; Pat Dietz in San Francisco in surgery and the Brian Beatties, the Bill Keenes, the Phil Wades and the John Reinschs have all become parents.

The engagement of Patricia PodlesM70 to Steve Barrett M70 has been announced by her parents. Ernst SchaeferM70 was recently married to Mary Miller.

We received a very interesting report of a DMS Thanksgiving party in Seattle, Wash., which brought together the GaryBlaichs M70, Carole Jenny M70, LindaQuan Knight M69 and husband, KenSettel M69, and Charles Irwin M69. Sounded like a real bash!
