The big news to report to you is the award of a $5.4-million federal matching grant for the acquisition of a new building and improvements in the present facilities. Construction of a seven-story building will start promptly to permit utilization by mid- 1972 when the first students in the three- year M.D. Program will be nearing completion of their course. Special note should be made of the invaluable assistance given by Senator Norris Cotton of Lebanon in securing these funds.
A second step taken by Dartmouth Medical School to alleviate the medical care shortage was the actual inauguration of the Medex Program on January 5. Twenty- three former military medical corpsmen began retraining for civilian careers as physicians' assistants. After three months of academic training, each candidate will spend one year in preceptorship training, under the close supervision of a selected cooperating private physician. Graduating candidates will be eligible to serve as medical assistants in the field.
