At the time when we here in the North were struggling with some of our deepest snows and coldest weather, Shirley Cunningham writes cheerfully that it was 95 degrees in the sun in Las Cruces and no snow. A card later from Arizona, where he and his wife were visiting, shows the desert abounding in lofty cactus plants and some sort of bush, sage brush perhaps. He plans to start about the middle of May for Cape Cod and ultimately Hanover and our 55th.
Now that our Florida sojourners are hopefully expecting more seasonable weather in New England, they are starting to return. This group had a delightful gathering March 2 at the Clearwater Beach Hotel. Present were John and Lucy Bell, Roger and Jane Brown, Fred Chase, Charlie and Ruth Goodrich, C. C. and Isabel Hills, Bea MacMillan, and Dick and Mabel Tolman. The Hillses were to leave March 31 for home via Columbus, Ohio; the Browns were starting a week earlier.
We are happy to have a letter from Chet Grover. After expressing regret that he had spent only two years with us, he says: "Since then I have been a soldier of fortune - a rolling stone. But I have always managed to keep a vague contact with Dartmouth. I have never acquired wealth, but I have had a full life." Chet has two young daughters, one nearly twelve, the other seven. He lost his only son at the age of fourteen. Congratulations on your health and active life, Chet. We would be delighted to have you join us for our reunion to celebrate our 55th anniversary. We are sure you would greatly enjoy renewing old acquaintances.
Hearty congratulations to Royal Parkinson on receiving a well merited tribute. For the past fifteen years one of his various activities was to serve as employee relations consultant for the Associated Industries. On March 18 at a meeting of the directors of that institution he received a cordial and sincere tribute in appreciation of his work for that body. Further, he was presented with a framed diploma.
We are happy that some like Shirley, who have not been with us for a rather long time, are planning definitely to join us for our 55th, July 8, 9, 10. We hope earnestly that more such will give us the real pleasure of their presence. I hardly need remind you the shadows are lengthening. We'll be looking for you. Hanover may have changed, but not the Dartmouth spirit of '05.
