In a somewhat extended celebration of his becoming a member of the redoubtable Octogenarians, "Tub" Besse spent ten days as the guest of his nephew on Cape Cod. From there he made excursions to some of his old stamping grounds, notably to New — buryport and Beverly, where he had dinner with a favorite cousin. He was at Provincetown the ill-fated day that our late esteemed President was shot. Finally, he was a guest speaker at the Cape Cod Dartmouth Club. Good for you, Stanley!
Another birthday celebrant recently was Charlie Brooks. He and Jessie had dinner at the Horace Greeley Restaurant in Amherst, N. H. Charlie kindly sent me clippings from the Rockingham County Gazette. These contain an account of the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Exeter Clinic and a cut of the men participating. This included Oscar Gilbert, one of the four physicians who initiated the proceedings which led to the erection of this useful concrete and brick two story building.
A note from Chet Lawrence tells us that he and Jessie were about to take off from White River Junction for Washington, D. C. After spending the holidays there, they were to fly January 7 to Portland. Oregon, to spend the winter in Tillamook with their daughter and family.
C. C. Hills writes from Florida that the temperature of 50 degrees there seems like 2.0 below in Vermont! This is because of the inadequacy of the houses to combat such chilliness. We hope his daughter's health, which has not been good, is improving. C. C.'s address: Box 755, Mount Dora, Fla.
If one needs a proof of how people move around in this day and generation, here is a little indication: of the Putnam grandchildren, the oldest, Kendrick, is in Australia where he has married an Australian girl whom he had met in Germany; his sister Judith lives in Paris, married to a young Frenchman; and Suzanne, nee Butterworth, is married to a lieutenant in the Marine Air Force, stationed in North Carolina. Incidentally, we have met and been very favorably impressed by these additions to our clan. As a last point on scattering, the four grandchildren presently in college are spread from coast to coast - Harvard, Swarthmore, Carleton (Minnesota), and Reed (Oregon).
Belated good wishes for the New Year (which should have appeared in the January Magazine). We wish you all a healthful, happy year.
