The news gets a rough start this month with the notification of the death of BobOare in that Northwest Airlines crash near Tell City, Ind., in mid-March. With the help of Bob Sweeney a more complete account appears in the In Memoriam section. In the cheering vein, it would seem that, as usual, the progress of this great class is at least perceptible - for instance we
SEE BY THE PAPERS, that... a nationally known psychiatrist talks on family health: "Dr. John P. Spiegel, M.D., discusses - Why are some families able to achieve such happiness and emotional health? Why do some mothers and fathers get along so well with their children? On the other hand, why is there so much family unhappiness?"
Dr. Spiegal is the nation's leading authority in the field of psychiatric research on family make-ups and what they mean in terms of mental health and illness. He is perhaps best known to the public as the coauthor of the war time study 'Men Under Stress.' "... Carl B. Hess, vice-president and director of American Securities Corp. has been elected a director of Simplicity Pattern Company, Inc.... Robert M. Rodman of Newton Center, Mass., will direct the activities of the lawyers' division in the 1960 Combined Jewish Appeal campaign ... and Herbert E. Hawkes Jr. presented the Samuel Williston Memorial lecture at Williston Academy. "Mr. Hawkes, whose father was a Williston alumnus, class of 1892, and whose son is a senior at the school, now lives in Berkeley, Calif.
Following his graduation from Dartmouth, Mr. Hawkes received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in Geology, then spent several years prospecting in eastern Canada for gold, chromium, lead and zinc. At other times he has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey in many parts of the United States, Cuba and West Africa, mainly on experiments with new methods of prospecting for metals. He is now Professor of Mineral Exploration, University of California, and working with mining companies in an advisory capacity." More information than we've gathered on Herb in 25 years.
Then ODDS AND ENDS that a good secretary could probably do much better, but anyway ... Hafey Arthur has resigned his part-time portfolio as hockey coach at Tufts. The rumor is that Tufts is dropping hockey. ... Howie McHugh is missing from his usual important spot in the broadcasting of the Boston Celtics play-off games because of a recurrence of a former illness but should be punching again by the time this gets in print. ... Walt Keady and wife Rita are now teaching at Arlington, Mass., High School and looking very well indeed ... and over among the money changers the NYC "34 Downtowners" luncheon on March 16, included Ed Corson. Clarence Davies, Charles Goodfellow, Dick Gruen, Will Maynard, Bill Scherman, Harry Gilmore, and George Copp. It was moved, seconded and voted that such luncheons would henceforth be held on the third Wednesday of every month except July and August.
Then we have our MEN OF DISTINCTION for this month ... like Gardner L. Brown of the First National Bank of Lewiston who has been elected president of the Maine National Bankers Association ... and Russ Ireland, who has been named chief underwriter for The Paul Revere Life Insurance Company.
By the time this grist goes through the chopper, or wherever grist goes, and appears to the critical eye of our public, if any, we will have enjoyed a few days of rest, relaxation and instruction in Hanover by virtue of our exalted position in the hierarchy of '34. For that we thank you one and all, and say that almost it makes worthwhile the sweating-it-out of the other months.
However, we do not need such a trip to fill you in on the Hanover scene; we are well posted on it scenically and scholastically.
Scenically it grows apace. Sadly, the Hanover National has, in searching for room for its burgeoning millions, over-run the hallowed precincts where once Buster Snow demonstrated the more difficult pool shots to Brock and Stone clientele. But such is progress and perhaps they don't shoot pool anymore.
For we've also looked upon with mixed emotions an interesting correspondence between the Dean and the current Foley delegate to the College regarding a so-called "Sophomore Hurdle." It seems you don't have to flunk out of there now, you may even C— out. All of which must have a limiting effect on some of the pleasant moments, but from personal observation the boys certainly enjoy a very able and understanding administration.
Without doubt we would have, too, but between you and me, Magee, it's just as well we got in and out of that place many some vears ago.
