STARTING next fall, the College plans to initiate a new policy on advanced academic placement or standing for entering freshmen who have demonstrated strong college-level preparation in one or more courses or areas of study. Based upon such criteria as advanced placement tests, College Board achievement tests, secondary school records, or special Dartmouth departmental exams, incoming freshmen may immediately receive college credit, advanced placement, and reduction of the distributive course requirement on the recommendation of the departments concerned.
This new policy, which will operate in its entirety for next fall's entering Class of 1964, has been made retroactive so far as possible for the Classes of 1963 and 1962. It will be directed by Dean of Freshmen Albert I. Dickerson '30.
According to Prof. George E. Diller, chairman of the Committee on Proficiency and Placement, the new program has clarified and expedited present placement procedures so that an entering freshman can ascertain his standing in advance on the basis of requirements published by the College. It is expected therefore that this policy will draw a higher percentage of students with outstanding intellectual ability to Dartmouth within the next few years. A special booklet, outlining the requirements for advanced placement, can be obtained from the Freshman Office.
