It surely sounds as if Secretary Jack andEleanor were having a fine sabbatical. A letter from Jack from Mallorca advises that after strenuous sight-seeing in Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville and Granada, which included some exacting and thrilling mountain driving, he and Eleanor took the overnight boat from Alicante to Palma to settle in at the hotel there for two weeks. Friends of theirs had a Borgward car for their use in Mallorca. Following this stay they flew to Palermo via Barcelona and Rome, and met another couple who drove them around Sicily and through Southern Italy.
You may remember that in a recent column Jack Hurd reported a hole in one by Paul Sanderson. Not to be outdone ClarenceSanders tells us that on that same day he scored an ace on the 165-yard fifteenth at River Oaks with a three iron. Incidentally that is the second hole in one for Sandy in the past ten years and he reports that it will probably be his quota for life. Probably so, for we would guess that he is already two up on 99 per cent of the nation's golfers. Sandy, who as most of you know is a consulting geologist with offices in Houston, Tex., reports that he recently purchased an eight unit apartment building to supplement his oil activities.
The eminent U. S. Ambassador to Greece, Ellis Briggs, was in Washington for a couple of weeks late in April, and we learn that Lucy is currently back in America to inspect their latest grandchild, attend her Northampton reunion, and do some wrestling with furniture in the Briggs' Hanover home. Ellis also tells of visits this spring from the Burroughs, Ned and Pamela Price and Frank Horan '22 and Betty.
And from Bob Burroughs we learn offurther and mighty interesting details of thevisit with Ellis. Bob writes under date ofApril 28:
About two weeks ago Dottie and I, together with Rupe '28 and Dor Thompson who were with us, enjoyed the great privilege and pleasure of dinner and an evening in Athens with Lucy and Ellis Briggs. Under their direction, the official residence has been beautifully decorated and furnished. We had a most interesting evening, and were regaled by Ellis with fascinating anecdotes of some of his experiences in past years in the Foreign Service. One item will be of special interest to the Class: Ellis has a new Mercedes-Benz which he purchased in Germany and for which he has managed to secure the Greek license plate 1921. His other personal car is "the only Jeep in Greece manufactured in Brazil" which he took over with him and uses on some of the winding hill roads and for family picnics and other trips around Greece. We had some wonderful skiing at Klosters in Switzerland and at St. Christof in Austria in late March and early April and were fortunate to have excellent snow conditions on the high mountains surrounding both towns.
Nelson Lee Smith, vice president of American Airlines, is the author of a booklet, "Regulation of Returns to Transportation Agencies," published by the Duke University School of Law. This is by no means Nels' first appearance in print for he is author of "The Fair Rate of Return in Public Utility Regulations," co-author of "Economics," and a contributor of various articles on transportation and public utilities to economic and business publications. Following a stint as Professor of Economics at Dartmouth, Nels was subsequently a member and chairman of the N. H. Public Service Commission, a member and chairman (1947-50) of the Federal Power Commission, President New England Association of Utility Commissioners, and President of the National Association of Railroad and Utilities Commissioners. Quite a record for our distinguished classmate.
On a business trip to Honolulu, FurbHaight had lunch with Ted Merriam, now a top executive of the Bank of Hawaii, and Furb reports that Ted very much looks the part. The next day Furb lunched with Dr.Hastings Walker (Pud to you), at his spotless cafeteria, just a small part of his marvelous TB Hospital in Honolulu. As some of you know, Pud has so far cut down TB in the Islands that one wing of his hospital is closed, whereas when he took charge years ago they couldn't take care of the patients. The class can well be proud of the contribution Pud has made to the health of our fiftieth State. Furb also reports that he and Mary attended the Olympic games in February from start to finish as they saw them light the torch and put it out. The show was loaded with Dartmouth talent, and Furb and Mary were especially impressed and proud of Jack Riley '44, former Green star, and the U. S. Olympic Hockey Coach who won the first Olympic medal for hockey since the start of the winter games.
Recent issues of the Boston Herald and Boston Globe carried a photo of Walt Lundegren, together with the good news that he had been named manager of the credit department of Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. of Boston.
Rog Wilde tells of a small 1921 reunion in Chicago the middle of April, with Ort andLoie Hicks and Harry and Helen Chamberlaine on hand. Ort was attending a meeting of directors of Encyclopedia Britannica. In addition to several dinners together, one of the high lights of the meeting was an inspection of Harry's excellent paintings.
Corey Ford took a bow as "coach" of the Dartmouth Rugby team, on a recent TV Sunday Sports Spectacular program, featuring the Dartmouth-Stanford game. ...We enjoyed the recent bulletin of the Dartmouth Club of New York. As you may know our own Cliff Hart is editor of this publication, and Abe Weld is a member of the Board of Governors of the New York Club that sponsors it.... Susan Bartholomew (youngest daughter of Bart and Catherine) was recently initiated into Phi Beta Kappa at Boston University. We will have more news about this brilliant young lady when she formally graduates.
Before we know it autumn and with it the football season will be with us. And it isn't a bit too early to make your reservations for 1921's Home Coming at Bonnie Oaks, Lake Morey, for the Holy Cross weekend October 14-16. Reg Miner has pretty well completed details and we will have the complete story for you in future issues of The Smoker. In Hanover in May for Class Officers weekend Reg also started to line up a grand program for our "FUN-Tastic Fortieth." Reg also reports that he and Sylvia had a fine vacation week in Bermuda in late April.
That does it for this month. "Thanks for listenin' " and the next column to appear in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE will again and as usual be edited by Secretary Jack. So keep the news flowing to him.
