As the last of the season's columns goes to press, we expect that a large number of the tribe has already commenced the long trek north in pursuit of that compelling Pole Star, the 'Fifty-four reunion tent. We are informed that Pete Liebman, "Brew-Meister" of the Rheingold Breweries in Brooklyn, will be waiting at the tap, and there will be a multitude of other distractions to divert your thoughts from election polls and national conventions to the more worthy considerations.
Among the "flatulent 'Fifty-fours" who will cluster for their "fantastic fifth" will be George and Mary Brooks, soon on their way to darkest and hottest Africa, via a four-month respite in London. George was recent recipient of a Ford Foundation's Training Fellowship for a year of historical research. His project, U. S. trade with West Africa (1789-1914).
Voted "Outstanding Interne" of 1959 at the Hospital of Joint Diseases in New York City was Dr. Jerry Barton. Jerry and wife, Peggy, were joined lately by baby daughter, Cathy. Additional sawbones in action are Dr.Mort Heafitz, at Boston City Hospital, Boston, Mass., and Dave Lee, assistant resident at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Capt.Bill Gardner is with the 194th General Dispensary on a New York APO. Extractions aboard the aircraft carrier Ranger in Alameda, Calif., are performed by Dentist Tommy Thompson. Lt. jg. Larry Chase is a medic aboard the same vessel.
Dick Danforth relates the shattering story of broken-legged Benny Davis, whom he found hobbling about in Aspen, Colo., several months ago. He didn't know if the fracture was a result of skiing, or after-skiing, activities. Also in Aspen, you will recall is Mead Metcalf's Crystal Palace, featuring a nifty night show visited by Easterners going West and Westerners coming East. Matter of fact, Aspenites are said to like it too.
Among the more recent changes made was the birth of a young red-headed son, Edward Lindsay May Jr., to Mary and Ned May on April 4. Another change, that of a name, from Tony Kossove to Tony Kane.
Among the more successful summit conferences these days are those given at high altitude by Air Force Capt. Bob Drawbaugh to his Air Force Academy cadets. Bob, who with wife Barb and two youngsters is stationed in Denver, is a pilot instructor in flight navigation.
Our business men continue to flourish. Parke, Davis and Company of Cambridge, Mass., has on board a peddler by the name of Grif Roberts, and the General Electric Company in Burlington, Vt., employs sales engineer Jim Stead. Jim Rill associates himself with Stead, Collier and Shannon in the nation's capital, and Bill Stern is executive vice-president of Delta Manufacturing Company in Miami, Fla. Financial economist Sam Chase is with the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, Mo.
Peter Dwight has been concerning himself with construction engineering for the Turner Construction Company in New York City. However, Peter assumed greater responsibilities on the seventh of last month when he married Patricia Jane Conroy of Syracuse, N. Y., and George Washington University in Washington, D. C. Bill Berno is district sales engineer for Jack and Heintz, Inc. of Inglewood, Calif. A safety engineer with New Hampshire and Vermont Kemper Insurance Company in Peterborough, N. H., is DickJennison. Dave Bartlett is with Kemper Insurance in Massachusetts. Joe Migely lifts his paychecks from the First National Bank of Chicago, Ill., and Dick Moody is blazing a trail as a fire underwriter with Employers Group Insurance Company in Boston, Mass.
A technical sales representative for Ansbacher-Siegle Corporation of Staten Island, N. Y., is Bob Boyd. Up in Montreal, Canada, Bob Berry earns the more valuable dollars from Sales, Thomas and Betts, Ltd. Frank Parsons Paper Company of Washington, D. C., employs Art Keleher.
Early every weekday morning Marine Capt.Tony Lukeman vigorously strides down his front walk in Tarawa Terrace, N. C. An hour later Dick Raphael trips off to the RCA Service Company in Camden, N. J., where he is a financial administrator. Buzz Clark, elected auditor of the Merchants National Bank of Boston in March, trundles off to duty in the Hub.
The usual flurry of arrows from Cupid's bow hit the mark this year. Alex Gray is making plans for a wedding this month to Katherine Berghuis of Albany, N. Y. Katherine attended Wellesley and the University of Minnesota. Lt. Burt Onofrio was engaged in February to Judith Tyree of Chevy Chase, Md., and Sullins College in Bristol, Va. Burt is stationed in a medical capacity at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Mike Payson, currently attending the School of Industrial Management at MIT, and Martha Willing of Philadelphia, Penna., and Connecticut College became betrothed in March. In Denver, the engagement of Ernie Dahl, who is teaching there, to Carol Adele Frederick, a commercial artist in the city, was announced.
Two more clansmen underwent major "alterations" recently. On March 26 Lt. Bill Murane lost his freedom in Newburgh, N. Y. Clamping on the old ball and chain was Rosemarie Palmerone, a Canterbury, Conn., school teacher and graduate of the State College of Education, New Paltz, N. Y. Another fatality, Ned Hoban was manacled to the hitching post in Wilton, Conn., by Elizabeth Shepard.
Your correspondent works off a Washington confinement in the Foreign Service by packing Americans off to Africa for the State Department. In anticipation of a similar fate, assignment to Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, next February, he is devoting more time to those standbys, "Restless Drum" and "Have Spear, Will Travel." In the meantime he is packing his typewriter in order to allow one fresher and more vigorous to replace him with the October edition. We have enjoyed writing this column and especially since it has enabled us to keep in touch with so many of you. A good summer to 'Fiftyfour, and, remember, if you couldn't make this reunion, we'll be having another four years from this month.
