As you probably now know, Fifty-four has a new Newsletter editor. At the annual meeting of the Executive Committee in October, Jim Fisher was selected to keep us enlightened and entertained. (Since we have two Jim Fishers, I had better explain that he is the one with the red hair who edited the late Jack-O-Lantern.) Jim spent two years in Hanover working with Dartmouth publications and now is working with a New York publishing house. We expect you all to deluge him with letters and material on the happenings of Fifty-four.
Well, for you in the North it is here, and, depending on whether or not you ski, it brings either gladness or grief. The Christmas season is also upon us, and for more and more Fifty-four families, this means a visitation from Saint Nick with all the trappings. A number of you are beginning to feel the burden of Santa's "gifts," I should imagine. The event that leads to the well-Santa'ed Christmas occurred recently for a couple of classmates. In Bethesda, Md„ a second daughter, Elizabeth, was born to Susan and Dick Wright. Dick, who wrote that provocative letter to the editor in the October issue of this MAGAZINE, works in Washington with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He is also most busy in Dartmouth's behalf as Chairman of the Maryland student recruiting activities. And in Greencastle, Penna., Ken and Jane Patterson also have a new daughter. Young Lisa Jane arrived on October 26. Ken is working with the Corning Glass Company.
A couple of Fifty-fours have been recently reported as moiling among mental unknowns. Dr. Martin Siegel is a psychiatric resident at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N. Y., and Howard Sloane is serving as a psychologist with the Department of Experimental Psychology of Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D. C. BobBassett is studying at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Tom Hall is a Lieutenant in the Navy, currently stationed at the Naval Damage Control Training Center in Philadelphia. We have heard that in faroff Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, Garry McKee is managing the Hotel De Al Soledad. Garry has been in Mexico almost three years now. John Milnor is a sales engineer with Armco Drainage and Metal Products, Inc., in New York, and John Schurman holds the same title with Murphy, Miller, Inc., in Chicago.
Jim Rill is an associate lawyer with the firm of Steadman, Collier and Shannon in Washington, D. C. Don Wagner is the Chief Planner with the City Planning Commission of Youngstown, Ohio. And from the South comes word that Bill Squire is an agency manager for Prudential Life Insurance Company in Atlanta, Ga. In Buffalo, N. Y., DaveThielscher is a salesman with the printing company of J. W. Clement. "Rudy" has become an ardent sailor, pushing his boat into the Lake Erie gales until the winter ice comes. Norm Veasey, a graduate of the U. of Pennsylvania Law School, is associated with the Wilmington, Del., law firm of Richards, Layton, and Finger.
In September, Norm Kasparson married Anja Kangas in Worcester, Mass. Norm, a Harvard-type lawyer, is the Assistant Title Manager for the State Mutual Life Assurance Company in Worcester. Also in September, Dave Metz was married in Coconut Grove, Fla., to Betsey Alden Casey. Dave has recently been promoted to the position of retail sales manager of the Dura-Weve division of the Scott Paper Company in Chester, Penna., and will be responsible for the market development and sales planning of Dura-Weve, a reinforced paper making process. In New York City, Jim Tofias married Wellesleyite Joan Kaplan of West Englewood, N. J. Jim, a graduate of Harvard Business School, is working as a junior cost accountant with Raytheon Company in Waltham, Mass. Jim and Joan have settled in Wellesley after a wedding trip to Nassau.
In Mansfield, Ohio, Ted Hartshorn and Marion Smith were recently married, and in Buffalo, N. Y., Mary Jane Gaiser signed on with Dr. John Herrmann. John is interning at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, after getting his M.D. from Harvard. And in Mt. Pocono, Penna., Ron Jabara married Carole Merhige, while in Hackensack, N. J., Hugh Connelley and Isabel McNulty were married. Hugh, who holds a law degree from Georgetown, is president of Hugh J. Connelley Company of Trenton. Finally, back in September, in Cleveland Heights, the engagement of Duke graduate Catherine Barrington to Bob Dean was announced.
This column and this MAGAZINE are "brought to you through the generosity of yourselves — if you have paid your Class dues. Then again, maybe you overlooked that letter from treasurer Dave Mandelbaum in the rush of Christmas mail. This is a bad season to be dunning, we realize, but perhaps you can add it to the list of resolutions for the New Year if you don't have it now. To that anomalous Yule greeting we had better add a sincere MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.
