In a brief ceremony in Hanover on April 30, President Dickey was presented the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the German Federal Republic. The award was made by Dr. Guenther Motz, German Consul in Boston, on behalf of German President Heinrich Lubke. President Dickey was cited for fostering international understanding between the United States and Germany. On presenting the award, Doctor Motz said:
"It is a particularly happy and honorable occasion which brings me to Dartmouth today. For a long time this wonderful college has extended a cordial hospitality to friends from Germany, nay to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Prof. Theodor Heuss, himself.
"The modern Germany was given the chance to speak to Dartmouth College and its men and I am deeply grateful that the modern Germany was considered a friend by Dartmouth.
"You, President Dickey, were a great promoter of this friendship. Be it as host to your various German guests of high and low rank, be it in your good care for 'Germania,' this unique language club, be it in your everyday decisions in University matters. Every time we found a friend.
"Thus it is with the greatest pleasure and satisfaction that I enjoy the rare privilege of acting on behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Heinrich Lubke, who awarded you, President John Sloan Dickey, the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. May I present you this high distinction and token of deep and friendly appreciation, and may I add my sincerest personal congratulations to you."
