IT seems incongruous in this mid-May of 1960 when the Summit talks have broken down and American diplomacy is at its lowest ebb to be reporting on the wins and losses of Dartmouth teams on the playing fields. Yet, the fields in Hanover are still green, the sun beats down warmly and for Dartmouth athletes today's games are just as important as they were in your time or mine. Would that the Summit game could be played as fairly and well as those on American campuses!
With about two weeks of competition remaining, the Big Green varsity teams are holding their own, while the freshman squads are doing somewhat better than their varsity counterparts. The varsity baseball club has a break-even record of eleven wins and eleven defeats, but a disappointing 2-5 mark in league play. The Big Green tennis team has the best record in spring competition with a fine 10-3 mark, while the lacrosse squad, hampered by injuries and the enforced absence for three weeks of Coach Tom Dent, shows only three wins against nine defeats. The track team has a 3-1 record in dual competition, while golf has two wins against six defeats. The cumulative totals for varsity teams show twenty-nine wins against thirty defeats.
The Dartmouth Rowing Club crews are having a relatively poor season, while the Big Green rugby teams are doing as well as usual except for a set back last week by the varsity at the hands of a Quebec All-Star team which cost them the Eastern Championship.
At the freshman level, the baseball team has won two and lost two, the lacrosse team shows one win and four losses, the tennis team has a 1-1 record, the track team completed an undefeated season with a 4-0 mark, and the golf team currently is also undefeated with four wins against no defeats. Freshman totals show eleven victories and only seven losses, while combined varsity-freshman team totals to date reveal forty wins and 37 set backs.
Here are some of the quick details behind the records:
