The Cutter-North Experiment, a program where students interested in government and international affairs live together, organized a conference of its own last month. Called "Self vs. Society" and jointly sponsored with the Public Affairs Center and the William Jewett Tucker Foundation, the conference was held on two consecutive Sundays and included chapel sermons, panel discussions, dinners, and an evening lecture.
The first Sunday program began with a sermon by Dean Richard P. Unsworth of the Tucker Foundation, on "Condescension, Confidence, and Ethics"; reopened in the late afternoon for a panel discussion where Dean Unsworth was joined by psychology Prof. John Lanzetta and Roderick Nash, Instructor of History; and concluded in the evening with a talk by W. H. Ferry '32, Vice President of the Fund for the Republic, on "Change: the College, Community, and the Individual."
The second Sunday featured a sermon and discussion by Dr. Paul Lehmann, Auburn Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary, whose topic was "Honest to God about God: Ethics and Religions." Francis W. Gramlich, Stone Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, and Professor of Religion Fred Berthold Jr. '45 also participated in the discussion that evening.
