GHARLES F. MCGOUGHRAN '20 of New York City was elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council for 1960-61 at the 100th meeting of the Council, held in Hanover during Reunion Week. Mr. McGoughran, who is Secretary of the Sinclair Oil Corporation and the representative of the class secretaries on the Council, succeeds Ralph L. Rickenbaugh '28 of Denver as president.
Other officers elected were John R. Willetts '40 of Milwaukee, vice president; and Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover, secretary. The executive committee will be made up of the three elected officers, Mr. Rickenbaugh, and Carlos H. Baker '32 of Princeton, N. J.
As members at large, to serve three-year terms until June 30, 1963, the Alumni Council elected Henri P. Esquerre '26 of New York City; Jerry A. Danzig '34 of New York City; Robert F. Thompson '34 of Burlington, Vt.; and John F. Page '39 of Harrisburg, Pa. Donald F. DArcy '33 of Dover, N. H., was reelected member at large for the same three-year period.
Mr. D'Arcy was chosen also as the Council's representative on the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn for 1960-61. Another Council election was that of John B. Faegre Jr. '33 as an alumni member of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council for a second three-year term until June 30, 1963.
During the three days of dinner and business sessions constituting the 100th meeting of the Alumni Council since its founding in 1913, a good deal of attention was given to the developing educational program of the College. In addition to President Dickey, who gave a "state of the union" report to the Council, speakers included Prof. John W. Masland, Provost of the College, in charge of academic affairs; Prof. John L. Stewart of the English Department, director of the general reading program for freshmen and sophomores; and Prof. Basil Milovsoroff, member of the Russian Civilization staff.
Orton H. Hicks '21, Vice President of the College, spoke to the Council on the final results of the Capital Gifts Campaign and on plans for the current Medical School fund campaign.
Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, assistant director of development, also spoke on plans for the Convocation on Great Issues of Conscience in Modern Medicine, to be held in Hanover from September 8 to 10.
A highlight of the opening dinner meeting on June 15 was the presentation of two of the Council's annual Alumni Awards to Wilbur W. Bullen '22 of Boston and Sumner B. Emerson '17 of New York City. Harold P. Hinman '10 of Canaan Street, N. H., who had received a similar award a few days earlier while attending his 50th reunion, was present and his citation was repeated. In morning and afternoon sessions the Alumni Council heard committee reports dealing with: the Alumni Fund by Chairman Donald F. Sawyer '21, enrollment and admissions by Chairman John R. Willetts '40, public relations by Chairman Ralph N. Hill '39, class gifts by Chairman Charles E. Rauch '30, placement by Chairman Harold S. Hirsch '29, bequests and estate planning by DeWalt H. Ankcny '21, and alumni relations and regional organization by Mr. Rickenbaugh.
Among the Alumni Council's committee assignments for the coming year, the chairmanship of the 1961 Alumni Fund was accepted by John D. Dodd '22 of New York City, who was a member of the past year's Fund Committee.
