The awards to Mr. Emerson and Mr. Bullen were made at the Alumni Council's dinner meeting in Hanover on June 15 and were presented by Ralph L. Rickenbaugh '28 of Denver, president of the Council.

Alumni Awards are made by the Council each year to Dartmouth men who have had distinguished careers and who have demonstrated devotion to the College by loyal and distinguished service to the purpose for which it stands. Each recipient was presented a small replica of the silver Wheelock Bowl and a specially printed citation.

The citations follow:

HAROLD PURMAN HINMAN '10

In a long and distinguished career one of your outstanding distinctions has been devoted service to Dartmouth College. In a college where thousands of men are serving as Trustees, members of the Alumni Council, class officers, alumni club officers, workers on enrollment and admissions, and in other ways, we acclaim you as one of those who, for the longest, has done the most for this College.

A long line of Hinmans have graduated from Dartmouth. Your class of 1910 gathered here before us today is celebrating its 50th reunion. With plenty of New Hampshire granite in your own character, you built a successful granite business in Vermont and retired a few years ago to our neighboring North Country village of Canaan Street for a quiet life of retirement. There you had the vision of a new boys' school and you founded Cardigan Mountain School in 1945 which has grown to an enrollment of over 100, with a handsome and extensive modern plant. You are the Founder and the President of Cardigan—all done in retirement!

In Dartmouth affairs you have served as president of the Alumni Council and secretary of your class. You sponsored the present circulation plan for the Alumni Magazine to reach nearly all of the 30,000 Dartmouth alumni every month.

We are delighted to recognize all of your achievements with this Alumni Award.

SUMNER BROOKS EMERSON '17

As a prominent investment banker and as a devoted civic leader, you have displayed outstanding qualities in many fields.

You left Dartmouth in 1917, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, then serving with the Army as a young lieutenant in the Air Corps Balloon Division. A series of business posts brought you leadership in world finance as a partner in Morgan Stanley and Company of New York City.

All of these achievements spell a full and successful life for any man. Yet there is much more. You are a Charter Trustee of Rutgers University and were a Trustee of the Trudeau-Saranac Institute. As a member of many professional organizations in New York, you have served as President of the Bond Club of New York and Governor of the Investment Bankers Association. You were a member of the board and vice president of the New York United Hospital Fund and led a successful campaign of the 1956 Fund as General Chairman.

Dartmouth affairs have always remained close to you. You are chairman of the class of 1917. You have been a member of the Alumni Council, chairman of the Alumni Fund, and an overseer of Tuck School.

For this full life of service and for your many high achievements we are privileged to present you this Alumni Award.

WILBUR WARREN BULLEN '22

You have made your mark in the business world and have assisted many great causes through major volunteer activity.

You are a loyal Dartmouth son of the first rank. Graduating with the Class of 1922, you have worked for that class ever since - as memorial fund chairman, class secretary, and now as chairman. In other Dartmouth ventures, you have been equally willing to serve, and your name is recorded as a former member of the Alumni Council, of the National Steering Committee of the Development Program, and Boston area chairman for all three phases of the Capital Gifts Campaign.

You were vice president and treasurer of the Southern Advance Bag and Paper Company, and, until your recent retirement, you were assistant general manager of a division of the Robert Gair Company.

Your active volunteer efforts have not been limited to Dartmouth affairs. The Community Chest, United Fund, YMCA, and other organizations in the Boston area have all called on you for distinctive, modest, and effective leadership.

We are pleased to recognize your accomplishments in these many fields with this Alumni Award.
