Fullback Jim Lemen, captain of the 1961 football team, is a hardworking, effective ball player, who is improved on defense. He is also a capable blocker in the V-formation offense. A graduate of Western Hills High School in Cincinnati, where he rereceived athletic honors, he is an engineering major. Lemen's ability is underrated.
Carl Funke is a senior end with plenty of experience. He leads all returning men in minutes played and adds his ability both as a fine downfield blocker and as a pass catcher. Last year he caught eight passes for 119 yards. From Upper Montclair, N. J., he is considered the team's most improved end.
Billy King, a 180-pound junior from Richmond, Va., is slated to fill the quarterback position. His speed and elusiveness give him the ability to run with the ball. He is a fine defensive safety man and has the poise and imagination to inspire team confidence. A history major, he is the son of Bill King '33, swimming captain.
In early practice sessions, Bill Blumenschein was leading all comers for the left tackle position. A junior, he played jayvee ball last year except for one minute of varsity action. A history major, he plays lacrosse in the spring. He weighs 195 and stands 6-1. His home is in New Hyde Park, N. Y.
Greg Cooke, a 175-pound junior from Drexel, Pa., is a top candidate for the left halfback position. A year ago he ranked second behind Rozycki in number of rushes and averaged 3.6 yards per carry. He is also considered one of the fastest men on the team and as a sophomore played 240 minutes at left half.
Holding down the left guard position is Bill Tragakis, a 197-pound senior from Watertown, Mass. He was switched from center last year and is rated as an excellent linebacker. He came to Dartmouth from Watertown High School where he competed in three sports. As an undergraduate, he is majoring in economics.
Stepping into the right halfback slot this fall is John Krumme, a 20-year-old junior from Milwaukee, Wis. He has speed, the ability to elude would-be tacklers, and good hands as a receiver, qualities which produce an exciting runner to watch. He is an engineering major and a Daniel Webster Scholar. His hobby is hot-rod racing.
One of the brightest spots in the Big Green line-up is at center where Don McKinnon has all but nailed down the starting assignment. He is big, aggressive, and mobile and by the end of the season could rank as an all-league prospect. From Arlington, Mass., he is a sociology major and a junior.
Senior Dave Evans will see service this fall at either fullback or left half. He is a powerful runner with good speed, who at Concord (Mass.) High School starred in track as well as football. He averaged 3.7 yards in 41 rushes last year, including a 16-yard scoring run in the Columbia game. Evans, is majoring in biology.
A 195-pound senior from Chicago, Steve Lasch, may have the starting right guard assignment assured. He moved up to the first team at mid-season last year and has never been sidetracked. He has proved himself to be a strong, hard-hitting ball player. In his sophomore year he was hampered by an injury.
Cary Spiess, a senior, hits as hard as the bigger men on the team. Sidelined a year ago by a broken leg, the 5-11, 155-pound halfback, is again fighting for a berth on the starting eleven. Rated strong on defense, Cary lettered as a sophomore. A government major, his home town is Creve Coeur, Mo.
Carter Strickland, who last year was switched from center to tackle, heads the roster of right tackle candidates. Considered a good blocker, he adds 219 pounds to the Green line. A senior, he is the son of N. C. Strickland '29 and the brother of Seth Strickland '60, an end.
A boy who showed better than average speed last year as a freshman may develop into a top halfback this fall. He is Chris Vancura, a 155-pounder, from Lockport, Ill. In high school he earned a place on the All-Illinois, All-Chicago teams as quarterback. Experience may be Vancura's best teacher.
The right end position seems firmly in the hands of Dave Usher, a senior, who has a pair of varsity football letters already to his credit. Last year he caught two scoring passes and nine tosses altogether. Majoring in architecture, his home is in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He was married this summer.
