For almost forty years Dean Sy has been the personification of Dartmouth Medical School to all Dartmouth students, both medical and premedical, who aspired to the doctorate in medicine. Suddenly, at 11:40 p.m. on 28 January i960, he was gone, killed instantly in a traffic crash. Shocked sorrow permeated the whole atmosphere of the School and, now, some two weeks later, those of us associated with him in the School still look for him to come barging through the door with his "What's up?" The details of his years dedicated to medical education and the welfare of his fellow man may be read elsewhere in this issue, but perhaps the biggest tribute to Dr. Sy was the throng which filled St. Thomas Church, literally to overflowing, for his final rites. For the many letters, telegrams, and phone calls, and to those who came to Hanover, some from many miles away, may we simply say "thank you."

In answer to many queries, a Rolf C. Syvertsen Memorial Fund has been established at St. Thomas Church, and a movement has been initiated by several of his former students to set up a suitable memorial at the School. For those who have expressed a desire to participate, these two avenues are open.

Dr. Peter von Hippel, Assistant Professor of Biophysics, lectured on the Kinetics of Collagen Degradation at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago.

Visiting lecturers have included Dr. Peter Witt of the Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse, and Dr. Durwood Smith of the University of Vermont School of Medicine.

Bill Brewster M' 44, now of the University of Florida College of Medicine, was in Philadelphia recently addressing the Conference on Derivatives and Isomers of the Thyroid Hormones on "Interrelationships between lodinated Thyronines and Catecholamines." Ernie Stebbins M' 27, as President of the Advisory Board for Medical Specialties, presided over a section of the AMA's Council on Medical Education and Hospitals at Chicago. The M'52 Newsletter, edited by Alfie Holt, announces the record of an even fifty class offspring to date. John Stanley M'56, presently USPHS Heart Disease Control Officer for the state of Maryland, plans to leave soon for U.C.L.A. and a residency in Ophthalmology. Al Root M'56 tells us that Jonathan David arrived in mid-December. Phil Mossman M'56 stopped off to visit after his return from the Caribbean and told us the Navy was arranging a nice spring cruise to the Suez Canal for him. Bob Freeh M'sB, Bill Gallagher M'58, and Eric Jensen M'58 have been seen on the ski trails recently, and Tom Hall M'58 was reported seen in town.

It is not too early for you to start planning your 1961 schedule to include attendance at the dedication of the new Medical Science Building. It is anticipated that a very worthwhile program will be presented at that time. Plan to be here for the first BIG medical alumni meeting since 1949.
