The College community was saddened and deeply shaken last month when Artemas Packard, who had just retired as Professor of Art in June, and Mrs. Packard were both killed in an automobile collision near Belmont, N. H., on September 6. In a small foreign car, acquired only a few days before, the Packards were driving to Maine for a visit with relatives and for an academic consultation to which Professor Packard had been invited. Mrs. Packard, the former Marjory Bowen Lord of Hanover, was the daughter of George D. Lord, 1884, who taught Greek and classical archaeology at Dartmouth from 1887 to 1933.
