Two sons of 1942 entered Dartmouth with the Class of 1965 this fall. They are Edward P. Stafford Jr. and Charles R. Thomson Jr. Ed Stafford is a commander in the Navy engaged in airborne early warning operations out of Newfoundland. Charlie Thomson, whose untimely passing was reported in last July's issue, was a practicing physician in Amesbury, Mass. Though these two young men are the forerunners of a long string of '42 sons which will stretch unbroken for many years to come, they are not the first. Gordie McKernan's son graduated last June with the Class of 1961. Ed, with three younger sons, certainly will be doing his share to keep this string intact. Ad Winship 11, who holds the position of special assistant to President Dickey, provided the preceding information. The class secretary is fortunate in having the cooperation of one so favorably located.

How many of you read Professor BobBlood Jr.'s excellent article on children and marriage, featured in the September 24 issue of This Week Magazine (the Sunday supplement in many newspapers)? The article is recommended for the good points on family relationships which it contains as well as the insight it affords into Bob's work. Guy Swenson Jr. was one of those calling to my attention Bob's authorship. Guy also took advantage of the opportunity to request a little advance notice of the fact that he will be sending out class dues reminders in the next few weeks. I'm sure he will appreciate our prompt attention to this detail.

Walt Elcock Jr. has been elected to the presidency of Olympic Insurance Company of Los Angeles. Walt has held executive positions with several insurance companies in Southern California, and this latest promotion represents another step up the ladder in the field of fire insurance. JohnWyper has been named to assume responsibility for all claim operations for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. Since 1959 he has been second vice-president, life underwriting department. John resides with his wife Mary and two children in West Hartford. This is a particularly pleasant announcement to pass along to you, because I knew John quite well as an under graduate and at one time in the dim past I worked for Connecticut General and know it to be a wonderful organization.

Ed McLaughlin Jr., lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, has accepted appointment as general chairman for the 1961 "Appeal for the Child Alone," the annual crusade by the Greater Boston Association for Retarded Children, Inc. Ed graduated from the Northeastern University School of Law, has five children, was the only man to be elected to two successive terms as president of the Boston city council, and thoroughly enjoyed himself at last spring's Big Twentieth. I trust the Dartmouth alumni in the Boston area will give Ed all the support he needs in directing this worthy effort.

Irenee du Pont Jr., director of the technical service laboratory of the polychemicals department of the DuPont Company, has been appointed assistant production manager for "Mylar" polyester film in the film department. Being an employee of the Eastman Kodak Company, perhaps I should say no more! Irenee received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from M.I.T. in 1943 and joined DuPont in 1946. He is a trustee of Tower Hill School and a board member of the Wilmington General Hospital and the Wilmington Trust Company as well as his own company.

The Security First National Bank of Los Angeles has named a new vice president and assistant secretary. The one man filling both positions is Jack Harriman, one of LA's leading attorneys. The new posts are part of the bank's new office of the corporate secretary. Jack has been with Security First National since 1955, prior to which he practiced with a Los Angsles law firm. Besides keeping watch over Barbara and the three children, Jack is active in many local organizations and is a member of both the state and American bar associations.

An interesting note is added here to last month's item about Harry Bond and his year of research in Oxford and London. Harry has traded housing facilities with Dr. David Hughes of Oxford, England, who will be in Hanover for a year doing research in microbiology. A very satisfactory arrangement! Word has been received of another world traveler: in June Bob Headley Jr. joined his wife Caroline and daughter Hope who spent the winter and spring in Hanover with Caroline's mother, Mrs. Francis J. A. Neef. After visiting relatives in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, the Headleys returned to Saudi Arabia where Bob is with the Arabian American Oil Company.

Have you been struck by the apparent advantages of being father's namesake? Nearly every name mentioned above is a junior. Come to think of it, my brother fits into this category - and he has all the looks, brains, and money in our family!

The Alumni Office publishes an annual Alumni Officers Address List. In the September 1961 issue the Class of '42 is very well represented. This interest in Dartmouth affairs and activities places on each individual considerable requirements in terms of time and effort. While this participation is rewarding to the individual and beneficial to the College and alumni, I feel it is too often taken for granted (and I am amongst the guilty). Therefore I think it appropriate to mention classmates, other than our class officers, who are current office holders. Names and positions (no numbers) follow.

Dartmouth Alumni Council: Bob Strasen burgh 11, Rochester, N. Y. Ed Spiegel, Webster Groves, Mo.

Alumni Associations and Clubs: BillClark, president, San Francisco; Bob Atwood, secretary, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Merrill McLane, president, Honolulu (fortunate fellow); Bob Schoonmaker, president, Rochester, N. National Enrollment Committee: WaMyMeckes, Cleveland and Ed Ruffner, Decatur, Ala.

These men and the many others who serve on committees, assist in enrollment and interviewing programs and work as assistant class agents - all who strive to keep our interest in Dartmouth alive - deserve our hearty thanks.
