Teaching Wins Out
November 1961

DR. S. Marsh Tenney '44, Dean, of the Dartmouth Medical School, has informed President Dickey that he wishes to resign his administrative post in order to concentrate on his teaching and research as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology in the Medical School. He will continue to serve as Dean while assuming the primary responsibility for recommending to President Dickey and the Trustees candidates to be considered as his successor. The new Dean is expected to take office not later than the opening of the 1962-63 academic year.

Dr. Tenney's service as Dean was praised by President Dickey as that of "a miracle worker who has richly earned the right to pursue his distinguished career as a medical scientist in the school his efforts so largely created."

Under Dr. Tenney's leadership the Dartmouth Medical School has been virtually refounded and today stands as the leading prototype of a two-year school of basic medical science. The faculty and research programs have been greatly expanded and strengthened, student enrollment is in the process of being doubled, and a whole new Medical School plant is being created, including the completed Medical Science Building, and a new dormitory and auditorium, under construction.
