The first winner of the annual Gold Pick Axe award, bestowed by Dartmouth's '49ers on a distinguished classmate, is QuentinL. Kopp, San Francisco attorney, of whom other '49 men can say with pride, "He was a classmate of mine at Dartmouth." In presenting the trophy shown above, Bob Alden, chairman of the award committee, added this citation:

To Quentin L. Kopp, Dartmouth Class of '49, the 1961 Gold Pick Axe Award! Having "gone west" in 1956 from his position of assistant counsel to the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, Quent's many activities have included: (1) Chairmaning the "Get Out the Vote" drive in the Kennedy-Johnson campaign for San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties. This is no doubt a source of pride to all '49 Democrats and many '49 Republicans as well! (2) Director of the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco since 1959. (3) Founder and treasurer of the San Francisco Democratic Association, an organization of Democratic business and professional men between the ages of 25 and 40. (4) President of the Barristers Club of San Francisco, 1961. (5) Director of the Bar Association of San Francisco, 1961. (6) Member of the Executive Council, Conference of Barristers of the State Bar of California, 1961-63.

In addition, Quent somehow finds time to interview prospective students for Dartmouth.

In closing, we're proud to say "Quent was a classmate of ours at Dartmouth."
