After dropping games to Pittsburgh, Northwestern and Bradley, currently ranked No. 2 nationally, the Big Green returned from the rocky road west still looking for its first victory of the season. Coach Doggie Julian's sophomore-laden squad finally tasted victory, however, as it opened the Ivy League season against Harvard.

Against Harvard, as in all Ivy League contests to date, senior center George Ramming hit for double figures with 22 points. Sophomore, second-string guard Steve Spahn also collected twenty points against the Crimson.

In the Yale game, the Green trailed all the way, but refused to give up without a fight. Down eighteen points at the half, Dartmouth fought back on the shooting of Bobby West, a sophomore guard, and Ramming, to finally cut the lead to a single point with one minute to play. The Elis, though, cashed in on free-throw opportunities and widened the lead to four points. West had 21 points in the Yale game and Ramming thirteen.

As the Big Green showed signs of jelling as a ball club against Cornell, Ramming and West once again dominated the scoring. Captain Ramming had 24 points. Part of the credit for victory should go to Dan Berry, who along with Ramming, garnered the majority of the rebounds and effectively controlled the board for the Green.

The Lions of Columbia came to town hungry for victory, and the Green went back to looking like an inexperienced basketball team. Four Columbia players collected double figure points, while Ramming, West and Spahn were top men for the Green.

This year's hockey team is finding victory a hard thing to obtain, especially in the Ivy League, where it has been beaten twice. Overall the Big Green skaters have a 2-4 record, with victories over Norwich and Bowdoin before Christmas.

The Green came within five minutes of beating Yale, only to falter under the onslaught of three Yale goals. Yale had scored twice in the first period and seemed to have solved the Green defense. But near the end of the first period the Indians scored three times in less than six minutes on goals by Captain Bobby Moore, Jake Haertl and Jack Phelan. The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Green until the closing minutes of the game when Yale unleashed a three-goal attack.

Still smarting from the Yale defeat, the Indians ran smack into a strong Harvard sextet, which is a heavy favorite for the Ivy League title. Moore scored the lone Dartmouth goal in the first period, which ended with the score 2-1. Three goals by the Crimson in the second period put the game on ice.

In a non-league encounter against Northeastern, the Green had the lead three times, only to see the Huskies come back and finally lead 4-3 at the end of the second period. Art Williams, Phil Roy and Moore all scored for the Green.

Olympic high-jumper John Thomas cleared the bar twice at seven feet plus, but the Big Green turned in a fine team performance against B.U. Nick Jennison won the mile in 4:17.9, and Tom Laris led the field in the 2-mile, posting a time of 9:33.9.

In a dual meet at Ithaca, the Green went down to defeat on the basis of the final two relay events. John Knight and John Ebers placed one-two in the 60-yard high hurdle race, and Jerry Ashworth and Bill Zeilman did the same in the 60-yard dash.

Coach Karl Michael appears to have another better-than-average swimming team, if the early season showing is any indication. The Indians showed plenty of strength against the Quakers of Penn, and even though they lost against Harvard, they put up a good fight.

In the League opener against Penn, Captain Charlie Brown and Terry Bentley were both double winners. Bentley won the 200-yard butterfly and the individual medley, and Brown took the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. His time in the 100 was 51.5 seconds.

Bentley had another fine day against Harvard as he won the same events that he did in the Penn meet. Brown was edged out in both freestyle events by a stroke, while registering impressive times. The Indian divers, Mike Wolland and Glen Gemelli, swept their event.

Freshman Swimming

Dartmouth 51, Harvard 44

The freshman swimmers won their second meet of the season, upsetting a strong Harvard team. High school AilAmerican swimmer John Boynton sparked the win with a pair of victories in the 200-yard individual medley and the 440-yard freestyle, and as. anchor man on the 400-yard relay. Boynton's time of 2:11.9 in the individual medley was a new freshman record.

Bill Lewis, another high school All-American, broke the 200-yard backstroke record with a time of 2:19.3. The 400-yard relay team established a new freshman mark with a time of 3:35.0. Sandy Shapiro also was a double winner in the Harvard meet and tied the freshman record in the 50-yard freestyle event, swimming it in 23.4.
