CREATION of the new position of Dean of Summer Programs and the appointment of Prof. Waldo Chamberlin of New York University to fill it were announced last month by President Dickey.

As Dean, Professor Chamberlin will be responsible for planning, coordinating, administering and developing summer activities on campus, including a fourth or summer term for undergraduates that is expected to be introduced in 1963. Other summer programs already under way include the Dartmouth College Conference in Liberal Arts for Executives, the Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management at Tuck School, the Russian Language Institute for secondary-school teachers, and others.

Since 1948 Professor Chamberlin has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in international relations, specializing in the United Nations. He served with the U.N. Secretariat as deputy director of the Documents Division and as director of the Documents Control Staff from 1946 to 1948. He was documents officer at the San Francisco Conference which established the U.N. and was on the London Preparatory Commission. During World War II he served with the State Department and the War Shipping Administration.

Professor Chamberlin was born in Seattle and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in 1927. After nine years in the shipping and export businesses, he returned to the University for his master's degree and then took his doctorate at Stanford in 1939.

In announcing the appointment President Dickey said that Dartmouth's summer programs were directed toward making full year-round use of the College's facilities. Completion of the Hopkins Center in 1962-63, he added, will enable the College to offer additional facilities in the arts, music, and drama in the summer.
