April 1961 S.R. STEARNS CE'38

On February 19 the Thayer School and Dartmouth lost one of its most active and devoted friends. Richard Pritchard '14 was a former president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, a member of the Thayer School Board of Overseers, and President and Chairman of the Board of the Stanley Works. Dick gave his time and support generously to encourage many of us, both faculty and students, in the improvement of curriculum and performance. He will be missed at future D.S.E. gatherings.

Barry Mac Lean ME'61, President, Student Chapter of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers, has announced the establishment of the Tim Ryerson EE'61 Memorial Fund to be used for the purchase of books to be placed in the Thayer School Library. Each book will bear a letter and book plate indicating its identity with the memorial. The first issue of the D. S. E. THE INJUN-EAR arrived on February 21 containing news of Thayer School activities including a most successful Thayer basketball team, a joke or two, and reports on several exciting research projects undertaken by Graduate Research Fellows. On March 3 a well attended and enjoyable ski and spaghetti party was held at the Skiway. A few daring souls tried the edges of the ski trails in search of the fast disappearing snow, but most, like your novice reporter, avoided the high odds against a safe run and reported for supper only.

Carl T. Washburn CE'26 has announced the establishment of the Industrial Estimating Service of Dover, Mass., of which he is a principal. Carl has been active in the design and construction of industrial plants and civil works for thirty years while with Fraser, Brace and Company, and Anderson-Nichols of Boston. Congratulations to Larry Furrer ME'57 for his promotion to Manager of Sales Analysis of the Monsanto Chemical Co. Plastics Division, in Springfield, Mass. Larry moved quickly following graduation carrying the responsibilities of assistant engineer in manufacturing, methods analyst, and senior analyst in the economic and sales department. He lives in Wilbraham with his wife, two girls, 4 and 2, and a boy, 1.

Tom Healy TT'57, project engineer with the Standard Oil Company of Ohio, is responsible for the coordination of capital development projects from design to operation, including budgeting control. Tom plans to take the 1961 State of Ohio Professional Engineer exam. Professor Millett Morgan, Director of Research, received a letter from John Ballard TT'56 who, as manager of applications engineering for Granger Associates, Palo Alto, Calif., is "dabbling in the field of ionosphere research." Millett himself is more than dabbling, having recently directed the wiring of a whole island in the South Atlantic to act as an antenna for his whistler program.

Cliff Simmons CE'40, with whom this writer spent a happy year on the third floor of old Bissell Hall, now demolished in favor of Hopkins Center, has been appointed Central Regional Manager of the Raymond Concrete Pile Division, taking charge of company interests in Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and St. Louis. Cliff, who was also elected an assistant vice-president, will have his office in Detroit.

We were pleased to talk to Harlan Fair CE'54 early in February when he was in the Hanover area for skiing, and to find a transit for his construction work. Harlan, having completed his CEC duty, is now a partner in the new firm of Skogsberg and Fair, General Contractors, White Plains, N. Y. They had unusual heating problems in their first job, a private school in Scarsdale, because of the unusual winter we have just been through. Another returnee from the Navy is Don Ford TT'57 who visited Thayer School in January. Having completed three years in the CEC, mainly on the west coast, Don is interested in getting into heavy construction.

Coe Embutsu ME'59 writes from Nagoya, Japan that he has a very interesting job with Mitsubrish Heavy Industries as a design engineer for the passenger car division. Coe hopes that any Thayer School people will contact him when visiting Japan. An announcement from Metcalf and Eddy, Boston, presented Charlie Hitchcock CE'39 as a Senior Associate on January 1, 1961. Congratulations, Charlie.
