A Salute to 1913's Secretary
June 1961

Class Secretary Warde Wilkins '13, who retired May 1 as Assistant Manager of the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association, was tendered a testimonial dinner at the Hotel Vendome, Boston, on April 26. Among more than 200 friends present were six Dartmouth contemporaries of '13 and '14.

Charles H. Linscott '13 was a headtable speaker and recalled the highlights of Warde's Dartmouth career, which included equalling the 100-yard dash record of ten seconds flat in 1911. Making up a Dartmouth table were George Knight '13, Harold McAllister '13, Alan Shepard '13 (father of the U. S. astronaut). George Steele '13, and Sherman Saltmarsh '14.

A delegation from the Ragged Mountain Fish and Game Club of Andover, N. H., came to the dinner, as did friends from many segments of the insurance industry and from Warde's own organization. Gifts presented at the dinner included a television set, some photographic equipment, and a large check. Warde also received a framed resolution drawn up by the board of governors of the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association and an embossed notebook containing congratulatory messages. "The dinner," said an insurance colleague, "was a fine tribute to a man who is much loved by all his friends and associates."

Warde was employed by the Association and its predecessors for 47 years, having commenced his service in April 1914. In 1928 he was named Assistant Secretary of the New England Insurance Exchange, and when the New England Eire Insurance Rating Association was formed in 1938 he became its Assistant Manager. Warde has been 1913's class secretary since 1918, and also has been a member of the Alumni Council and secretary of the Boston alumni association. He has been a director of the Insurance Society of Massachusetts since its founding.

Now that he has retired he plans to establish his residence at Potter Place, N. H., where he has had a summer home for many years and where he can give more time to the Ragged Mountain Fish and Game Club.
