POLICY ON HAZING UNCHANGED
October, 1909

A meeting of the sophomore class, called by President Nichols, was held early in the term in A Dartmouth. After Dean Emerson had explained the working of the new cut system and spoken of the chapel customs, President Nichols addressed the meeting, speaking to this effect:

"Dartmouth College has a reputation, which your-class must cherish and preserve. I wish to congratulate you upon the spirit which you have so far displayed. You must guard against being influenced by the men of lighter heads to perform hastily those acts which will not be for the best interests of the College. The policy of the faculty is to prevent the hazing of Freshmen. The penalty for this offense may be permanent separation from the College. I sincerely hope that this measure will not have to be adopted to eliminate this custom."

After the meeting President Nichols personally met the members of the class.
