Memory fails me in trying to recall another class secretary whose devotion to duty led him to interrupt his honeymoon in order to meet the editor's deadline. Such has been the case with me. After recording the balance of late spring and summer activities of note, Bettie and I plan to continue from the point at which our plans were so rudely upset! She is a most charming and wonderful person - I am truly fortunate and happy.
Harry and Nancy Bond have returned from his year's study in England. According to Ad Winship, Harry looks hale, hearty and, if' this is possible, wiser. Ad also reports Dick Godfrey was in town depositing his son Ricky '66. Dick is with Ford, as is Kent Barclay, who was in Hanover just before Labor Day, with his wife Tay. Other members of the 1966 class include the sons of Neil Barber, Jim Idema, Pete Koelsch, our former classmate, Peter A. Neill.
Dick Duncan has been named Sullivan County (N. H.) Republican party chairman. Dick graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1948. He is a partner in the law firm of J. M. Shulins. The Duncans reside in Newport, N. H., with their five children. Paul Vaitses, Melrose alderman, announced his candidacy for Republican nomination for governor's councillor in the 6th Massachusetts district. Paul has been successful in his political sideline which must be a source of great satisfaction to him. Word on the outcome of his latest campaign has not reached me, but I bet on Paul to continue his winning ways. Ed McLaughlin, lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, whose campaign in June for Democratic party endorsement for governor was unsuccessful, was appointed to the position of general counsel of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, effective August 1, 1962. This new position, happily for Ed, pays more than the top office in the commonwealth. Ed graduated from Tuck School and Northeastern University Law School. He lives in Jamaica Plain with his wife and their five children.
Don Williamson campaigned (successfully, no doubt) for election to the Winnetka, Ill., school board in April. He is president of Williamson Adhesives, in Skokie. Don is active in the Rotary Club of Chicago and the Union League Club, amongst other community affairs. He and Marion have a daughter and three sons.
Al Bede has been proposed for admission as a general partner of Cruttenden, Podesta & Miller, a Chicago-based investment firm. He will be assigned to the firm's expanded New York office, as resident partner in charge of sales, institutional liaison and underwriting syndication activities. Al received a B.S. in Commerce from Northwestern in 1942. He and Margaret have two daughters. Bob Hill has been elected director of Interser, Inc., an international trade and investment services concern. Bob spoke at the St. Johnsbury Academy's commencement program in June. Bob also is chairman of the Girl Scout Fund Drive for the Swift Water Council, which includes most of New Hampshire. Charlie Brown has been named to head the manufacturing function of ITT Surprenant, which produces wire and cable products. ITT recently purchased the Surprenant Manufacturing Company which Charlie joined early this year. He has more than ten years' experience in this field. Charlie is a Tuck-Thayer graduate and lives in Carlisle, Mass. The Browns have three children.
Before signing off, here's a gentle reminder from Guy Swenson to pay up the class dues. We must keep our operation solvent and that time has rolled around again.
That nearly exhausts the tub file, as well as my devotion to duty. Because I like to retain a few items as a cushion, will terminate this abbreviated column with the suggestion you keep your eye on the Big Green this fall and try to get to some of the games to renew acquaintances with "old" classmates and college friends.
