A Message from the new Fund Chairman
NOVEMBER 1962

The past two Alumni Fund Campaigns, under the dynamic and imaginative leadership of Jack Dodd '22, clearly have marked the start of a new era for the Fund. We not only have passed the million-dollar level but have moved well beyond it. We have set a new contributor record. Our alumni participation is one of the highest in the nation. Our Class Agents organization has grown in size and effectiveness. Where do we go from here?

The answer seems to be a, simple one. We continue, to build the Dartmouth Alumni Fund in every possible way. We seek further means of strengthening the Class Agents organization. We strive to improve participation—in the younger classes particularly, but also in the veteran classes. We have done well in our search for major gifts, but there are many thousands of our alumni still contributing at the same levels of a decade ago. Realistic giving in proportion to income and interest is still a major goal. Underlying all of these objectives, of course, is the necessity continually to present Dartmouth's case for support to all members of the Dartmouth family.

Each of us must be informed of the reasons why our help is important to Dartmouth's progress, indeed to her survival. Each alumnus should be told why Fund goals must increase, why participation, realistic giving and better understanding are important.

The Alumni Fund is not a vehicle simply for conveying money out of the pockets of the alumni and into the College coffers. It is a voluntary program led by an Alumni Fund Committee, chosen by the Alumni Council—which, in turn, represents Dartmouth's 30,000 men. It is an annual opportunity for men who have had a part in Dartmouth's experiences to share in the perpetuation of a free and independent liberal arts college.

I am honored to serve as Chairman of the 1963 and 1964 Alumni Fund Campaigns. I pledge my best efforts to this task. I invite your support as leaders, workers, donors—and as critics, too—for this is your Fund and it must reflect your wishes.

The Dartmouth Alumni Fund will observe its Fiftieth Anniversary during the 1964 Campaign. I am confident that working together this year and next we can uphold the fine traditions of past Funds and create new ones as the Fund matches steps with the College in its march into Dartmouth's third century.
