The 1962 cross-country season ended about as it started, with Captain Pete Wells setting the pace. The senior runner was fifth in the Heptagonal meet, just 18 seconds off the pace set by Harvard's Ed Hamlin, who was first. The rest of the Green runners finished well down in the pack of 64 starters, thus accounting for Dartmouth 9th place finish.

In dual meets, the Indians toppled Boston University, and lost to Manhattan, Brown, and Harvard by lopsided scores. In a triangular meet the Green was second behind Yale, but ahead of Columbia. Wells finished strong in every race; it was the lack of depth which prevented the Green from doing better.
