The winter carnival circuit is still several weeks away as this is written, but the Dartmouth ski team is beginning to round into shape. In the words of Coach Al Merrill, "I am pleased with our early progress and I think we have more depth than any other Dartmouth team in my eight years here."
Four men who will probably play important roles in the Indians' ski fortunes - alpine competitors Bob Hiller and Pat Terenzi and four-event men Dick Durrance and Jim Jacobson - attended the national alpine training camp last month in Colorado. Three other leading skiers - Captain Jim Page, a four-event man, and Whit Miller and Ed Williams, both cross-country specialists - took part in the Eastern cross-country camp at Franconia. Both of the above camps were held for collegiate skiers, in an effort to develop the best talent possible for the 1964 Olympics.
During the month of January the emphasis was on individual competition which should enable Coach Merrill to select the best men for the carnival meets in February. As this is pre-Olympic year, competition is expected to be "red hot" according to Coach Merrill.
In the annual Hanover Invitational Meet, January 12-13, Page was first in the Class B jumping and Sel Hannah was second. In cross country the Indians' A team was edged by a U. S. Army team, and the D.O.C. B team was third.
