Pingry Centennial
February 1962

To commemorate the Centennial observance of the Pingry School in Hillside, New Jersey, the board of trustees recently published a fine volume of the history of that institution, turning back to the school's beginnings in 1861. Of particular interest to our readers is the fact that the Rev. John Francis Pingry, the founder of the school, was a member of the Dartmouth Class of 1836. Graduate of the College at the early age of 18, he was both teacher and minister for 25 years before he opened the "Pingry Select School for Boys."

The present Pingry School, relocated in Hillside, N. J., in 1953, still bears the essential character imparted to it by its founder during thirty years of service to the institution; and the Centennial volume, TheBeginning of Wisdom, makes abundantly clear the warm regard that the school has for Dr. Pingry, a remarkable educator and teacher of boys.
